Canada destination of choice for American sex-buyers, study finds

Just as the majority of Canadian sex tourists who are arrested or detained were in the United States over the past three years, Canada is the preferred destination for Americans looking to buy sex. A study based on interviews with 101 Boston men who buy sex found that 27 per cent of them had bought sex in other countries. Canada topped the list.

Among the other preferred destinations were: Dominican Republic, German, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico. Other destinations included: England, France, Italy, Philippines, Barbados, Brazil, Korea, Switzerland, Netherlands.

In fact, more of the men said they’d travelled to a foreign country that admitted to having gone to another American state.

The study was done by psychologist Melissa Farley(feminist anti-pornography and anti-prostitution activist) and researchers from the non-profit organization, Prostitution Research and Education, and presented at the Psychologists for Social Responsibility Conference last July in Boston. Farley and PRE researchers recently also interviewed 125 sex buyers in Cambodia. She will be presenting a report on their findings this July at a conference in Phnom Penh.

The average age of the Boston sex-buyers first experience was 21; one in five reported that their first sexual experience was with a prostitute. Fifty-eight per cent were alone when they first paid for sex; 43% were with friends.

Eighty-eight per cent of the buyers met women indoors; 39% said they used the internet.

Bars were the most common location for them to go for sex (62%); followed by private parties (57%), strip clubs (55%), hotels or guesthouses (52%), escort agencies (44%), brothels (33%), massage parlours (29%), drug houses (22%). Only one of the 45 men with a college education used street prostitution exclusively, while 17% of those who had not completed college did.

Two of every five men bought sex at least once a month. That’s similar to findings in studies done in other countries, which has lead some experts to suggest that the men who get arrested are usually novices; more experienced buyers are better able to avoid arrest because among other things they may know the prostitutes themselves and know more about police procedures.

The average number of times the Boston men had paid for sex was 54, although it varied from one time to more than 600.

Over time some said things changed. Among the comments were: “I have an easier time treating them worse” and “It’s like being an addict, you always want a better high. . .”

Two-thirds viewed paid-sex as consensual, even though the same percentage also believe that most women in the sex trade are lured, tricked or trafficked into it.

Almost all of the men agreed that children are “almost always available” in bars, massage parlours, escort agencies and brothels in the area.

The majority also agreed on the most effective deterrents – a registry of sex offenders and public exposure such as having names and photos published on billboards, in newspapers or on the internet.

They said educational programs don’t work.

Makes sense since prostitution is legal in Canada (mostly escorts and rub and tugs, street prostitution is not), there was actually a land mark legal decision made last week in the province of Ontario that will see legalized brothels in operation as earl as next year:

See they don't explicitly tell you in the article that prostitution is legal in Canada. They insinuate that it isn't ...giving the story a shadier undertone.

Prostitution may be morally questionable but since it's legal then who gives a fuck?

Anyways, I don't see what the big deal is. If it's legal and those selling their bodies are of consensual age, there shouldn't be any controversy.

Prostitution is no where near "rampant and widespread" in Canada. 75% of the population don't know it is legal and I have seen more street walkers driving through the US then I have seen anywhere in Canada. The legality of prostitution makes zero difference to regular non-pros.


The biggest difference is that there is advertising for hookers in the back of some newspapers that you wouldn't find in the US.I guarantee that there is just as many hookers in major US cities than there are in Canada.


Is it really news that Bostonians go to Canada for sex? It's almost the same distance from Boston to Montreal as it is from Boston to NY. And even closer to Sherbrooke, which is known as a US party town in Quebec.


If this were a study based in any of the southern cities, Mexico would win in a landslide.

I've heard of quite a few New Yorkers doing it too. Their arguments emphasized the legality (you're not breaking the law in Canada) and supposedly better prices/selection in Montreal/TO.

In my 22 years in Canada i've only seen 2 street walkers. Prostitution is far from rampant here. In fact quite the opposite. I'm shocked when someone said there are tons of prostitutes in Montreal. I suspect that one would get this impression if they are hanging out in strip bars. Other than that I dont find it very existent.

It's legal but not rampant at all. While the work is legal, largely to protect the health and well-being and minimize the risk for the females involved, Canadians generally just aren't that interested in partaking. It's also really expensive compared to more well-known places like Colombia or Thailand, about 5-10x more IIRC.

I'd say it has no effect on making Canadian girls easier or harder lays. American girls are, for the most part, a little easier.

Basically, what canucktraveller said sums it up. Yes, prostitution is technically legal in Canada, so escort and rub and tugs can advertise in the back pages of newspapers or online and they won't have the Mounties kicking their door down in some big sting operation.

Street prostitution is definitely illegal and you don't see it too much, especially in the past 5-10 years, since most girls work indoors and though online sites.

I don't frequent the rub and tugs and massage parlours but have friends who do, basically you go in and pay a price (something like $150-200/hour) and whatever happens behind closed doors is up to you and the girl.

I agree that prostitution is as rampant and in the open (if not more) in most US cities as it is in Canada, and no the fact that it is legal doesn't seem to have an impact on regular girls.

In Quebec sex-work is not taboo or frowned upon like in the rest of Canada. Yes the majority of folk still equal street hookers = prostitution but its totally different than that. I never realized a escort was a pro until just a few years ago it never clicked and they advertise openly all time.

Its big business though no doubt a lot of married men use the pros as a escape from there decaying wives and since the escort, rub and tugs are dominated by Chinese women its no surprise you get a rush of Americans coming here for that yellow fever. What is funny is that especially in TO Strip Clubs have been lashing out against rub and tugs and even swingers clubs. SCs are no fun for me personally I see no lure in getting teased by a female for money with no opportunity to fuck her. SC culture is way more big in the states but here in Canada outside of Montreal.. Fuck em. So TO SCs have been bitching since men don't want to waist there time or cash with broads whom just will grind there junk when they can go fuck a equally or even hotter girl for the same price lmao.

A guy I know in Vancouver is a party consultant. He is also a doorman at one of the better clubs in the city and knows a lot of cats with bank.

His biggest clients are guys from Seattle and San Fran that come up and want to party for the weekend. My guy takes care of hotel, drugs, booze, DJ and of course escorts.

Talking with the American guys from these parties, best looking hookers in North America are in Vancouver (I used to hear it was Montreal) and the lax drug laws also help.

There are streetwalkers in Vancouver, but they are only tollerated in very specific areas. The impression I got when there was that as long as they stay in the tollerated areas police won't give them too much trouble. I have no objection to legal prostitution, but picking up some random hooker on a street corner is pretty much the bottom of the barrell. I think it may be a bit of a fetish with some guys. I remember a local billionaire being caught with street-hookers in his car. Well, being caught for class A drug possesion, where it came out he was with hookers at the time of arrest. A billionaire, but his idea of a good time was picking up streetwalkers in the worst part of town. His name was Mr Something Ho. I kid you not.

I think the legal staus of prostitution in Canada is that it is legal to be a prostitute, but not to "live off the avails of prostitutioni" i.e. It is illegal to be a pimp or madam.
