I grew up in Houston. PM me for more info, but you'll want to head into the area called "Uptown". The best bar in the city is called The Tipsy Clover. Avoid downtown like the plague (it's a gentrified slum that's just as dangerous now as it was 10 years ago). The area around Rice University is decent but kind of limited.
