Mar del Plata, Argentina
Have any of you guys been to Mar del Plata? I just read about it somewhere and it sounds like a cool spot to scope out. It seems like all the Porteños go there for their summer vacation.

This is what came up on my flickr search:

I've heard that it's pretty weak. But it's the only beach town in the entire country. In summer months the hot girls prefer Punta del Este, Uruguay.

RE: Mar del Plata
I have heard it explained like this (I had a good friend from Mar del Plata and have some friend that have been to both):

Punta del Este : more flash, more miami beach

Mar del Plata: more chill, more like a san diego beach town.

I was there this January and got rid of my longest dry spell ever (over a year). The beaches are packed, I mean jam packed with miles of of just this http://vps12.mardelhosting.net/ead/images/mardel.jpg

People are down to meet up, and there is one club called Sobremonte that is jumping. Its huge, I mean huge, and theres plenty of space where its packed and other places where you can chill and talk to people where its not so loud. I had an amazing time and I recommend going with good friends, an apartment, a car, and some decent Spanish. Playing guitar would also be a big plus.

Oh by the way the water is freezing. You're in Buenos Aires in Jan or Feb and the whole city is an oven and just getting to Mar del Plata you notice its cooler. You get to where the edge of the beach is and the sand and air is hot, and you walk towards the water confident you'll enjoy it. The closer you get the more wind starts picking up and the cooler it starts getting. By the time the waves of water touch your feet you realize the water is almost like recently melted ice. Shits cold, real cold.

Sobremonte is one of my fav clubs in the world

its awesome

beach sucks because its overshadowed by high rises to the point where it blocks the sun and water is cold

on a plus note, grand casino has the worst poker players in the entire world

MDP is particularly popular with middle class Argentineans.
