RE: Further remarks on your command of English
(06-29-2012 02:30 PM)gds555 Wrote: keepreal: Here are corrected versions of your latest two postings:
I know, dude, my grammar sucks when I type, cuz I don't pay attention and I think faster than I type; but my English is way better than my Mandarin. Yes, one of the other Chinese languages was my first language, not Mandarin; then Mandarin replaced my first language; then my first language was replaced again, this time by English, when I was a little older. [At least I think that's what that sentence was supposed to mean.] It's complicated: my speaking is definitely native for English, but my Mandarin is like around a child's level, although it's reasonably fluent. Dude, I meant "I have to be in China", not "I have been in China": I drop shit out all the time when I type, like verbs, pronouns, just everything.
Dude, I can't teach Mandarin to someone beyond the basics unless I have a book, plus I don't speak Mandarin with a standard accent. Anything related to business or academia I don't know well enough to teach. Sending a resume is almost useless. I think either teaching English or working as an assistant might work with my credentials. Man, my degree was not too helpful.
While some of my corrections above are just stylistic refinements, a lot of them are corrections of constructions that are as redolent of China as the exhaust from a Chinese restaurant kitchen. While it's true that there are a lot of verbal flaws even in the postings of native speakers of English in this forum, they're almost always clearly the flaws of native speakers. Your flaws read like the flaws of a nonnative speaker, and specifically a Chinese one. Even your "drop[ping] shit out all [the] time" is done the way a native speaker of one of the Chinese languages would do it, not the way a native speaker of English would do it.
I should add that I have the right to criticize here, because I know what it is to learn a foreign language--specifically, French--to a high level of excellence. My spoken French is good enough that I've briefly fooled native French speakers into thinking I was French myself; and French friends of mine have said that my writing in French--painstakingly done, using the best dictionaries and grammars--is essentially flawless, good enough that I could be a journalist or even a novelist in French. Certainly I have some inborn talent for languages, but I also attribute some of my success to avoiding complacency and always trying to improve.
You need to accept the fact that your English isn't as good as you think it is. I think it'd be appropriate for you to look for a job where you use your English; but at the stage you're at, I don't think you should try to teach it.
So you are saying I am not at English as I think I am, then I suck at every language I speak. I think speaking wise I am fine, even other Americans say I am native and occasionally I get stress wrong with new words, but when it comes to writing I am atrocious in every language I write.Nevertheless, I should really slow down and check my shit when I write. I think English teaching would not be bad for me, but there might be something I am better at if I had more credentials.

I certainly didn't mean to impugn your abilities in your original Chinese language (standard Cantonese? Weitou? Hakka? Teochew?). I'm assuming that you've continued to use it over the years, and that you're currently using it with your relatives in Shenzhen.
If standard Cantonese is your original language, I wonder whether there might be at least a small number of opportunities to teach it to foreigners. (If your original language is something else, though, I'm presuming there'd be few or no teaching opportunities for that language.)

dude, u always correct my English, it is embarrassing. My 1st language is not Cantonese, but I can understand some Cantonese.
I forgot how to speak my first language for various seasons mainly because lack of exposure to it and usage of it, as I said my English is way better than my Mandarin and my Chinese is good enough to get by and read and write basic stuff, I would struggle in a Chinese writing class opposing to doing okay to fairly well(if I fix my mistakes) in a English class. In fact I think if I went to Russia for a year or two for school, my Russian which is pretty bad and it would become better than my Chinese.

RE: bored out of my mind in China, what to do
Going off your typing, your English grammar seems fine (don't know for spoken, but people who can write well tend to speak well).
Your game is weak? Good news; you need to scale back your traditional American caveman Alpha-ing in China, or at least I did. Maybe it's because I'm like Chinese-dream caliber (6'3, blue eyes, white, nice teeth, some of my former muscular build remains [though most has been destroyed by the lack of gyms and rice-noodle diet]), I barely have to try to get QQ and digits and set up from there; road-tripping to see two (possibly three) girls in the month of August.
Get a job (seriously, it's fucking easy), go chop some honeys, get a girlfriend and make that shit happen. You think after the ride I was given in June that I was down on myself? I got a job within a week that pays better and is in a better place, and I'm a hard-partying narcissist; you can do it if I can do it.
EDIT (Forum is loading slow for me): You claim to have no money, and yet you want to go to Hong Kong, otherwise known as one of the most expensive places on the planet? Excuse me while I laugh derisively.
Seriously, do you not have friends that can set you up? The Chinese love to hire their friends (which I have heard and several times, and actually explains some of the retards I have worked with).
You have a degree, presumably from a western school; get on that shit.

Did you go online or you just went to the school and try to make interview? How is it that easy? What is your credential and your logistics? In the beginning, I was pissed that no one replied except for one person, and I still did not get the job after my interview. Dude, my spoken English is much better than my English when I type. My Chinese has gotten mediocre after years of little use of it, but still not bad, I just need to learn and practice using higher level of Chinese beyond basic communication shit. I am also under 25 and all the schools says I need to at least 25 to get a work visa. Yeah, me too I haven't gone to gym for like two months too, but I have been doing push up, pull ups, and sit ups everyday though. But I will have an interview for a job in southern Russia soon and I will definitely take that if I get it, otherwise maybe somewhere in Taiwan, Georgia, or China. Shit this internet at this house is cunt. When I mean my game is weak, I have approach anxiety or lack of desire sometimes, have difficulty approaching, and my confidence is not too high around girls, my body language is tense, so on....

Let's not give keepreal the wrong kind of encouragement

I'd promised myself that I'd lay off this subject, but I just have to jump in one more time and take issue with Nonpareil's statement above. keepreal's English grammar does not seem fine: rather, every post of his that I've read has contained a significant number of errors. And Nonpareil's implication that the problems in keepreal's postings are nothing but typos, and that in reality he writes well and therefore must speak well, is ridiculous. I see no reason to believe keepreal's endless supply of vapid assurances that his spoken English grammar is actually quite good, and that the flaws in his postings are "only his typing" or "only his writing". Why should we believe something like that without proof? Nonpareil is providing the wrong kind of encouragement, kind of like those school systems that plump up their students' self-esteem to a high level while those students' actual academic performance continues to be unsatisfactory.
I'll say it again: keepreal's English is good enough to use in a job, but unless I see proof to the contrary, I can't believe that it's good enough for teaching. And regarding OldRich's statement that "I know people with English much worse teaching in China": Just because it happens, that doesn't make it right.
