I used to have my own alternative rock bands in both Austin, Texas and in New York City, in my early to mid twenties. We enjoyed some moderate success, but obviously we did not make the big time (Or else I would not have learned game or be a member of this forum, typing this right now).
I'm headed to Bucaramanga, Colombia next week with plans to record some songs and maybe form a band. While I was traveling the first 5 months of this year in SE Asia, I bought a guitar, practiced singing and rehearsed some songs with my younger brother who was also a bassist and guitarist in my bands.nIn order to try make the project a success, I've recruited and made friends with many Bucaramanga musicians on facebook. Now that I'm not a poor young bastard, I have the money to hire a quality producer and musicians.
This is the first time I've tried recording or playing music in a foreign country. One of the first things I noticed was how hot the lady friends, of these Bucaramanga musicians, were on facebook. Of course I sent them friend invitations, which were accepted once they knew I was a pal of the musicians. So, to all those who know how to play an instrument or have been in bands before, it seems like a great opportunity to meet both cool guys and hot ladies. Has anyone tried this before? If I were staying longer (I'm staying 6 weeks), I would also try to form a classic rock cover band in english. There is always a market for that abroad and seems like a great way to meet foreign girls. We shall see what happens in Bucaramanga.

Back in the day I was very focussed (could maybe even say 'obssessed') on make the big time. However, now I just want a band I can have fun with and enjoy playing the music and gigs.

This is a great thread, and would love to hear other forum member's input on making a band on a foreign country.

Yeah, that's a really good idea. Nothing drives the girls crazy like a rock star.

I'm not in a band right now, but have a guitar and have done some playing and singing here and there. Man, for some girls it's an automatic in.

It is definitely a way in. Even if all you have is a cover band abroad, then that is a great way to meet girls, playing in local bars and clubs. Not to mention access, to the tons of women friends that local musicians tend to have. In the end, there is nothing like playing the music you love and being recognized for it. If things go well, I might just postpone my trips to other countries and stay in Bucaramanga longer.

Yes for sure in August, once I have been there for a month. There is no data sheet for it yet and Mixx seemed to be the only one, I know of, who had been there. I hope it doesn't turn out to be like with Belo Horizonte; a city with gorgeous women who are relatively conservative and difficult to bang. Judging from the amount of single mothers, I've encountered so far online, probably not.

Me and my buddy here in BKK talked about this before. Neither of us have musical talent, but I could see a decent looking white guy over here in Bangkok cleaning house playing at some bars/clubs. Being able to sing and play the guitar in front of a decent crowd would get you mad pussy here I think.

Doesn't take mad talent either. Just the ability to sing and play guitar decently, in english. Just have to learn 5 or 6 classic rock or popular songs. This could work just as well in a small bar in Bangkok, a hostel in Paris or a beach in Brazil.

Great idea.

I think there are so many opportunities for western guys in asia, to generate both $$ and girls.

You can leverage your whiteness, relative coolness/status, & skills built in the west.

Examples:

-Models in Bangkok. There's quite a gang of them here. None of them look as "model-looking" as models in the west... just averagely tall and good looking. I heard it's pretty easy to get into, especially for girls.

-In the Phils I heard it's easy for any non-asians - white, black, latino - to get small acting roles in TV series or films.

-YMG talked about career hacking in and how it's possible to work your way up much faster than in the west, with a western degree and smart networking:

-And I think you can multiply your value even more if you can speak the language.

In Korea there's a show called "Global Talk Show" where they have a group of foreigners talking Korean with Koreans. They're all just students but the foreigners are regular weekly panelists on the show because they can speak fluent Korean, which is so rare to find.

I play guitar, piano, sing a little and am always completely shocked by the reaction of women. I feel like a bit of a sado as a 30 something travelling with a guitar like a wannabe rocker that didn't make it. Plus I feel like it must be so obvious that 90% of the reason I have the guitar and learned in the first place is as a prop to attract women (although I do love it now too, its like buying a puppy for a prop, you can't help but grow fond of the little scamp).

However women NEVER get onto this, and no matter how badly you play they think its amazing. So I think what you are planning is a great idea and especially in colombia will be like fishing with dynamite if you have a band! I plan to be there later this year so if you are around would be great to Jam/ Pretend to Jam to pick up women sometime!!!

Awesome idea. As an amateur guitar player, I hope it works out for you and please let us know how it goes. I read this book, "Big in China," by Alan Paul. It's about Paul's adventures in China starting up and finding success in a blues band after moving there with his wife. Great read.
