I'm a student in NYC looking to make some cash to help get by. Any ideas for part-time gigs that allow for frequent/quality interaction with new people (i.e. NOT ONLY CO-WORKERS) on a regular basis?

I am already pretty good at carrying conversations with strangers, but I figure there is always room for improvement so I might as well kill two birds with one stone (make money + practice talking to everyone I see).

I think its better to find a job with physical contact with other people. My advice would be waiter or salesman (boutique would be great) - approaching strangers, sometimes stressful situations etc. you could learn/practice a lot.

But is it travel-related ?

I remember distributing political party leaflets and make people pay attention to them not just throw them away.You have only some seconds to trap the attention before the people pass by.Certainly it helps reducing anxiety talking to strangers.I paid particular attention to young good looking women as receivers.

bartender, sales dude. because these jobs are casual and the people are coming to get something from you (passive). in all the other jobs, you have to grind to sell your shit to other people (active).

What about waiter?

I worked as a waiter for 4 months last year in a posh resturant here in São Paulo. It's a great way to meet people, learn how to deal with them and how to work under pressure.

Plus, the clients were some of the richest, best looking 20 year olds in the city.

Sales. You can make decent cash slingin' wireless phones. I did it through college and it helped my game substantially.

Wireless Advocates--the cell phone company inside Costco--is a decent gig. Avoid a company called The Mobile Solution; you don't want to be forced into talking to every single person that cruises by you in a mall. I'd suggest working for an indirect company, rather than inside a Verizon or AT&T store. The hours are more flexible and it's not as high-stress.

Other retail gigs in malls are solid too, but for a student, the money is in wireless.

Tutor, whatever you know be a tutor in it. Plenty of one on one situations which is where the largest portion of your game takes place anyway, plus you can do it anywhere in the world. Tutoring girly things will probably get you more girls, I don't think being a maths tutor is going to help much.

I totally agree. Wireless is where it's at.. Either that or selling computers, which is what I did in college. You get paid to talk to people and with wireless, your guaranteed to talk to young girls that u can potentially turn into something.

tons. I had women change infront of me, sometime they left the door open just a little almost hoping to get attention. Girls would ask me all the time if their boobs looked too big in that shirt.

The best was I had this move where I would bring them in close while standing infront of a 3 way mirror and let em feel what I was made of She was trying on jeans or stretch pants.

A few times I made out with them, one time this milf who had her kid with her shoved the little guy out from her room and brought me in. She was divorced.

I think being a car salesman is it. You have to interface with people and you will meet plenty of people since buying cars is an integral part of North American culture.

My vote goes to bartending/bouncing. Even a bar back. Decent pay, fun coworkers, and of course access to drunk pussy. I miss the hell outta it, b/c I was getting paid to "party". Don't expect to kill it immediately, but when you get it, prepare for the poosy tsunami. More than likely plan on banging coworkers, then move out to the general crowd.

A key is to become fluid on the job. Never get frazzled, smile a lot, be friendly with a bit of cockiness. DON'T be a dick bartender. And don't flirt with every skirt in the place. There's a way to keep it discrete.

Working bars is also a great way to crack social circles.

The wireless gig sounds great (though retail does too, especially if you have the jobs of telling girls if they look good or not in the fitting room like Chyamor mentioned earlier)....Any more info on how to get one of these sort of positions?

There are PLENTY of dudes who make bank slinging wired office phones to businesses. I used to work for a company that sold headset adapters and accessories and they crushed it. Wired is still a GIANT industry.

It depends on the company, really. Ideally, you want to work for an indirect. Stay away from direct stores, as those are more like careers, not just a job. Ideally, you want to be in a kiosk/booth. The cart gig gets old and I don't like the feeling of not having my own space. It's much easier to deal with an irate person when you're inside a kiosk, as opposed to outside a cart. Stay away from cart cell phone places.

If there is more than one mall in the area, it's worth figuring out a few things:

1. Where the rich people are. You have to pass a soft credit check to buy anything other than Cricket/Boost Mobile (where you do not want to be selling). Probably the best way to do this is use Trulia.com's heatmap. Just google "(name of city) home prices heatmap trulia." That should give you a brief idea of where the money is at in your city, based on average home values. You don't wanna be at the mall where everyone requires a $400 deposit, per phone line.

2. Find out where the girls (and students) are. Students with little to no credit can usually get a phone with little or no deposit, and you'll have the opp. to mingle with attractive women.

Standard retail is fun, but you'll make substantially less money, and you have to fold clothes. In wireless, on a slow day, you might read about new phones, not do shit all day other than eat and talk to people, then make $200 for 30 minutes worth of actual work. Another guy said computers are great too, and I'm sure that's a legit gig as well. If you can find something where you make commission, it'll be a nice gig to have while in school.

To find a decent wireless place to work, just spend some time at the mall and watch what they're doing. Identify who is talking to every single person walking by, who looks trashy/ghetto (some places hire total scumbags), etc. You'll have to figure it out for yourself, pay attention to the people and how they act when they're not talking to people, if possible. Might be worth making a few trips for recon.

You want to stay away from the places that force you to talk to every soul that's cruising by. Yes, you'll probably get better at chatting up women this way, but once you hone your skills, it will get old, and you will feel like a jackass.

Sell what works in that city. You do not want to be selling AT&T if it doesn't have decent coverage in your area. Yes, despite their maps, there are plenty of cities where certain carriers don't work; this will greatly improve your happiness at work. Verizon has a very large customer base, is growing, pays well, and works everywhere. As someone who has sold everything except Nextel, I can assure you, Verizon is the easiest to sell, activate, deal with, etc.

There really aren't qualifications to work there, but sales experience helps...just be friendly, and come across as a guy they wouldn't mind spending an hour or two in a box with, which is something you will have to do. I dropped off a printed resume and had no sales experience. If they bring it up, tell them you're hungry and want to learn the sales game. If the manager is good, he'll respect that despite any lack of qualifications.

Watch the movie Cocktail. Never get drunk in a bar you wanna work in, but be persistent. It's not easy, but you will land a job. My first gig was in a roughneck bar right outta the Marines.My brother got beat so bad a girl had to turn him over so he wouldn't choke to death on his own blood. Horrible place. My brother almost lost his life in there. It was payback. Carried a roll of quarters in both pockets for the fight. Heavy fisted. And a Colt 1911, and an AR-15 in the truck. That was my quals.

It got better after that. Better places, better people.

Even though 99% of the gigs are straight hustles (no wages, just commissions), Direct Marketing is all about the approach, ramble and the sale.

If you can find one that pays and gives commission, give it a shot.

Also as people have said, bartending.

After reading through this thread again, I have to say...find a job selling consumer electronics, be it cell phones, computers, televisions, etc. Make sure you're getting some kind of commission though. If you're not, you'll still be required to hit some kind of quota without any of the reward.

If you don't care about the money or having to fold a shitload of clothes (and I mean a shit ton), go for any retail position where you're sure there will be a steady flow of yatches.
