I have always been hesitant renting a car in eastern europe and seriously thinking about it to explore the smaller cities. Any advice or horror stories out there? I am not talking about driving around within a large city (I will just taxi it) but driving between cities and to smaller towns. Specifically, I am interested in experience in Ukraine, Romania, Poland, but also in interested in the other countries too. thanks.

I have driven across poland latvia Lithuania and Estonia and is pretty simple same as driving anywhere else but with Shitter roads and more hookers stood next to them.

A relative rented a car in Budapest and we drove around Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia. It was more expensive than renting a car in the USA, but we had no issues. No roadblocks with police asking for money, if that's what you are worried about. Border crossings were straightforward. You'll have police issues driving in Uzbekistan but not in most places in EE. For Ukraine, I heard if you get stopped and you have all your paperwork in order, the police probably will not ask for any bribes. Ukraine has shitty roads. If you can afford it, renting a car is a great way to check out many places in a short amount of time.

The only place I ran into any sort of unexpected stoppage was in Bosnia when entering Serbian controlled parts of the country. I was quite worried about this when the guy stopped us in the middle of the road holding a rifle as Americans are not exactly the most popular clique amongst Serbian nationals due to our intervention against Milosevic in 1999. However, after presenting my passport the guy happily waved me along.

Driving isn't really that bad. An up to date GPS comes in handy, but honestly there really aren't that many roads in EE so getting lost is more difficult than one would think.
