in many latin american countries there are scotiabanks which only charge a minamal fee to bank of america card holders. you can also set up an account with fidelity and they charge 1% on any atms worldwide. the best option is charles schwab which has no charge at all on atms all over the world. only $500 to open an account.

Capital One and Fidelity do an excellent job with this as well. I get the market exchange rate, no foreign transaction fees, and no out of network fees.

I think balance minimum is 5k for Capital One. I forget fidelity.

The only downside to Charles Schwab is that any money transferred in there first goes to the brokerage account, where it has to sit for a couple of days before you can transfer it to the checking account. Thus, you need to plan ahead a few days.

hsbc has tons of atms world wide also. Dont think you need to pay fees. Once I get a few free k's I plan on opening an account just for international travel.

When going to Ukraine I bring a big wad of cash. You are allowed to bring up to 3k USD. I get better rates at the money exchange kiosks than any of my ATMs (I dont have a Schwab account).

In Mexico, I withdraw from Scotiabank and there is no fee. But I have a Bank of America account in the US.

I believe even with HSBC you need to pay the international transacation fee unless you are a premiere account holder (min 100k balance) I have an HSBC account and have had to in multiple countries (Mexico, Europe and Asia). you do get the ATM fees refunded (I once got a $10 ATM fee reversed!)

Interesting. I haven't had that problem with Schwab.
