This article in the NYT is full of concern trolling about men, especially young men, getting to the gym and working out. It claims that only genetics can give you a good body.

Underlying this article is the idea that all of this is a big waste of time for young men, they should be doing something else...I wonder what though. Working hard and getting married? There's just something subtly sinister about the whole thing, but you would never know it unless you are unplugged/red pill/etc.

Also the usual steroid scare tactics.

Wow, that is some classic scaremongering. You could put it in a textbook on propaganda.

SUPPLEMENTS! They're scary! You keep drinking that protein shake and your balls are gonna fall off, boy! They're like STEROIDS, which are evil!

" In a study to be published on Monday in the journal Pediatrics, more than 40 percent of boys in middle school and high school said they regularly exercised with the goal of increasing muscle mass. Thirty-eight percent said they used protein supplements, and nearly 6 percent said they had experimented with steroids."

I know I'm supposed to be astonished and horrified, but this right here is some great news. 40% of boys are now lifting regularly to gain muscle? I don't know what it used to be, but when I was in middle school it damn sure wasn't that high. We could see the whole obesity epidemic washed away in a wave of whey protein isolate. Of course, they don't tell you what it used to be, or how reliable that survey is (A self-reporting survey done on middle school boys doesn't sound like it's going to be terribly accurate, especially when you're asking them questions related to their self-image.) But it's got space limitations and an agenda to push, so we don't have time for that.

And spare me the BS about "expensive" supplements. A 2lb. jug of Casein is 30$. You can get some Creatine for 25$ or so. Both of those will last an average user two months. So 27$ a month? Even the brokest high school kid can afford that.

You know, people like Keoni Galt talk about a conspiracy by the media and the government to keep us fat and unhealthy. I used to think they were nuts. Then I read articles like this and I'm not so sure.

$/calorie or $/active ingredient I don't think most basic supplements like protein powders, creatine etc. are expensive.

I suppose the NYT would rather have ALL young people, rather that just 60 % be overweight, obese and generally unhealthy. To me they are upset by people, or at least people they don't approve of, being exceptional in any way. Since all the other children will feel so sad because one or two others are better than them in some way.

The people with the ACTUAL eating/other disorder are the 60% who sit on their ass all day.

In what world do you live in where you can last on 2 lbs of protein for 2 months? You are barely going to last 2 weeks, if that, with 2 lbs of protein.


Getting serious into bodybuilding is expensive especially for a teen. You are definitely going to have spend around $50-75/month on protein if you want an adequate amount of protein. Not to mention gym costs.

I am a firm believer in holistic medicine and the power of yoga and it is my personal belief that one can attain strength and health through these two things my son, however, does not think similarly. he is on a work-out program called "starting lifts" that is extremely dangerous: they use a barbell with very heavy weights and then do excercises that can destroy the back and knees (for example, one he calls the deathlift) well, I am unable to convince him to stop this crazy program. my problem is I caught him taking the steroid "creatine" yesterday after his work-out. I snatched the container away from him and told his father later that evening, who agreed with me that we had to stage an intervention. I honestly do not know what I should do next. does he have to be sent to a rehabilitation center? I am not familiar with steroids and how abusers make recovery.

An adequate amount of protein? The human body can only use approximately 25 grams of protein after a workout. A 2 lb container of protein will provide that 5 days a week for a month. The rest will come from their food.

Most schools have gyms and many offer weight lifting as an elective class.

Yes, that's step 1 and 2 in the reasoning we posted. Sure higher T implies lowered boner threshold, but it also raises your pride. So probably pump and dumps go up, seen in public goes way down. My $ is still on this being a good thing on the whole long term (how often do you see guys squatting 400+lbs white knight? Or heavily into boxing/MMA etc), but of course bad short term for each individual man.

Thats broscience dude. Your body can definitely handle way more than 25 G of protein at once.

Plus you probably are going to need more than scoop a day of protein if you want to build serious muscle. If the kid is on average 180-200 lbs, he is going to need around 180-200 G of protein. How many teens do you know that get that much protein from their food sources? You know how hard and expensive that is?

Uh, pretty often actually. Every time you go into a gym, you'll see big dudes 'white knighting' girls. It's white knighting because they wouldn't follow around some pencil neck dude doing air squats and donkey kicks with him, but if it's a chick, Holy Fuck! Lay out the red carpet son! Unless you are training her to get a bigger ass, there's little reason to bring a woman to the gym.

The main reason I discount the guys lift -> girls get hotter thesis is because it just hasn't happened. Sure, there's lots of other factors. But over the past 50 years or so, lifting has gotten much more popular, but women have gotten uglier.

Are there any stats on which country lifts weights the most? I wouldn't be surprised if it's The United States. In my travels, I've never seen anywhere with so many absolutely monstrously jacked guys walking around.

And we're the fattest country in the world.

We're just an exaggerated country really. Everything done to the extreme.

I constantly notice the most jacked guys with pretty busted girls. Here in NYC, I feel like you see meathead Italians with fat ugly guidas and jacked black dudes with fat ugly girlfriends all the time. Much more common to see some sharply dressed slim dude with a cute girl than some jacked guy with one.

I have trouble seeing what motivates someone to dedicate such a large part of their life to just pushing weights up and down to become bigger. You lift weights, to become bigger, so that you can lift more weight, so that you can become bigger, so you can lift more weight...

To be fair, I saw that ALL over Italy. No wonder American women love Italian men; they all dress in designer clothing, peacocking to the max, tan, in shape...Italian women? Some of the most masculine and ugly faces I've ever seen. I saw more jacked/peacocking dudes with busted women in Italy than anywhere else I've ever been. But that was on the west coast in Tuscany. From what I understand it's different in other regions. Campania is supposed to be a goldmine.
