Anyone know of a website that list airfare based on date and city? I know many website have monthly prices of destination but I am looking for one that shows based on departing city.

For example lets say I want to travel on 12-1 and live in NY. I want to see a map which list airfare based on destinations.

SkyScanner is generally the best with this.

But yes, I agree with you insomuch that most airfare search engines are incredibly inefficient and lack many options when searching for a trip.

For what you're asking Expertflyer.com is likely the best option. It is however a pay service and very dense to get through as it shows unfiltered airline data results.

the reason most airfare search engines are not giving you the option to just search massive amounts of dates is because the data requests would knock out their servers when thousands + bots are doing it.

I 2nd Sky scanner. I purchased a ticket to Paraguay and everything went fine though I will say I did read some bad reviews about skyscanner. I would just call the company direct soon after the purchase and soon before the flight to confirm it.

You can also try hipmunk.com

It uses a bar graph based on price, duration, arrival time, departure time, and the ever helpful "agony factor" for long flights with multiple layovers.

FYI: The flight information is not always accurate. It pays to double-check all information with the carrier.

It goes beyond seat availability and shows you the number of seats available in each fare bucket.

No it does not tell you anything about standby tickets. These doesn't really exist today as we knew them 10 years ago. Unless you're an airline employee or have similar connections you will not get a standby ticket as these are only issued on the discretion of the airlines own agents (ie not through travel agencies or other 3rd parties).q

Trying Expertflyer.com free 5 day trial. From what I can tell I need to first search fare information and then compare that to flight availability booking class. Is that right?

Correct, and if there are no such seats available you put up seat alerts for those fare classes. Of course the trial period of 5 days is likely to run out by the time an alert triggers because an empty seat has opened up.

Try http://www.FlightFox.com as well. Experts bid to find you the lowest price, but the caveat is that you have to pay a finders fee which is about 50 bucks. If you find a better price they refund your finders fee however, so its a sweet deal. I found a Washington DC to Paris flight for $585 roundtrip on here. You can also interact with the said experts and they're very knowledgeable.

on this expertflyer site, If I do a search for ord to msy on 2-9-13 I get some good fairs ($278 rt) with an effect date of 1/22/13 Expiration date of 3/19/13

does that mean a sale/low fair promo is going to start on the 22nd? currently ita has prices in the $450 rt.

Sometimes the airline sites themselves can be the cheapest.

Apparently they make more money when you buy directly from them than when you buy through a site like Kayak or Skyscanner.

And so they offer discounts further than what aggregators display.

For instance, I flew from Mexico City to NYC on Delta for less than $200, buying directly from Delta, when aggregators showed the flight to be nearly $400.

Often times it's just luck of the draw and chance. If you have an hour or two to spend browsing, I would reccomend hitting up actual airline sites.

Some good suggestions, I'm going to bookmark this thread for my up coming trips to test a few options mentioned here. As to the airlines' website, seems that Air Canada is the worst in that as fare there are more expensive than say on Expedia. AC is making everything in their power to piss off customers....can't wait to relocate to Western Canada to have access to better airlines leaving from YVR!

No, it might be available sooner (or not). You can enter a sale date as a factor when searching for fares which you should play around with to get different dnapshots in time.

I think there's even a column in the search results that lets you sort on "availability date".

I don't usually buy tickets myself, but I just got cheaper tickets with Momondo than were even listed on Skyscanner... This could be an isolated incident, however, and the difference wasn't large.

Back in the day I loved kakak, but it's now clear Kayak is shite. it doesn't run the multi-airline searches it should be doing, so that you can often get a much cheaper ticket by searching different legs of a trip separately. Skyscanner seems better with this.

Here's a website that does what you are asking for I believe. I have used it in the past to find the cheapest flight from Germany to USA (any location). I have already selected NYC as an example then you can specify date of flight or which country you want to go to.

Some leading travel websites are a no-fly zone as far as Delta is concerned.

Delta is shutting out sites like TripAdvisor from accessing its information on fares and scheduling, making it difficult for travelers to compare prices and get the best deals, according to a study released Wednesday. The study by Travel Technology Association, which represents the travel sites, found that some airlines are "selectively restricting flight information," which could result in consumers paying more for air fares. "Airlines want consumers to book directly through their own websites and forgo comparison shopping," the study said.
Restricted access to air fare info could result in an 11% price hike for consumers, according to the report. That could add billions in annual costs to air travelers.

The study specifically mentioned Delta Air Lines (DAL) as having cut off at least two dozen travel sites since 2010, including TripAdvisor, FareCompare and Fly.com. It also said that Delta, American Airlines (AAL) and United Airlines (UAL) have published policies about restricting access to information about air fares and schedules.
"We want to make sure that information that customers are getting about United products are correct," said United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson.
Delta spokesman Anthony Black said, "Delta reserves the right to determine who it does business with and where and when its content is displayed."
American was not immediately available for comment. The Travel Technology Association's members include Orbitz, Expedia (EXPE), Priceline.com (PCLN, Tech30), Tripadvisor, Airbnb and HomeAway.
