Indoor rock climbing
Any of you guys do this? We have supposedly the largest indoor rock wall in the country here and I've been a few times and really enjoy it. They make you learn to tie your figure 8 and belay, so if you go with a friend you can climb all you want, any section, without dealing with instructors or auto-belays. They also have a big bouldering section. Seems like great exercise that's exciting and cool to talk about.

Also, some of those climber chicks have great bodies and are showing them off in their spandex Banana

That wall is incredible.

I have been a few times, I love it. I need to register at this gym nearby and get a membership, even if its just for a few months.

RE: Indoor rock climbing
Yep, have done that a few times. It's a lot of fun. OK for active dates and also good for groups of friends. Opportunity to play on the word "belay", "belaying; etc. In this context belay refers to the act of anchoring someone while they are climbing up. As the climber climbs higher the belayer, while remaining on the ground, pulls in the rope and uses his body weight to secure the climber so that if they lose grip they won't plummet to the ground. I see the girl climbing i your picture above does not seem to have anyone securing her. It might be that only relative beginners are belayed, I'm not sure.

You don't always have to be with a buddy. You can boulder on your own. I think bouldering would be a great way to meet people as well.

And I am curious to why you say height is a factor. What is your reasoning?

I could see taking the right girl here for like a date #3 situation.

She had a belay, he's to the left not in the picture. This girl was probably 17 and I overheard that she was "professional".

She basically came in with a friend, had her own bag of gear, did the toughest route on the wall, and left. She mapped out each rock in like a mock climbing fashion on the ground before making the climb.

yeah, bouldering can be done without a partner. A larger person can grab bigger distances. Some knobs are very far apart, a shorter person cant grab the knob, because he cant reach it. You would have to jump.

Indoor rock climbing gyms are one of the dwindling refuges left for slim chicks in the U.S.

There's one of these in my gym right next to the barbell section, but it's noticeably smaller. Agreed the talent is good, although the girls seem to be eternally surrounded by their orbiters.

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

RE: Indoor rock climbing
You're in Atlanta I'm guessing. I live right around there two and have been here more than a couple times. I'll vouch for this place its great for a workout.
Expect to have blisters for weeks before you get use to it.

That's the one negative of climber chicks. I've met few with soft hands. Climbers have rough calloused hands..no matter how much lotion you try to use to soften them.

It's the equivalent to guys that lift weights.

I find places like this. Pretty good for game. There a good amount of downtime between climbs. People take breaks. Or stand around with their friends.
Is easy to walk up to a group and talk since you clearly have something in common at that point.

But I have noticed some people, are kinda closed. They come with their group to climb. Not to meet other people.

And I don't see many all girls groups. There's usually a guy around. But not discouraging.
The best thing to do( I haven't,cause I'm not that hardcore in the scene) is to find a club/ group. Even if its just a group of people you meet at the place, and get connected with them and climb at least semi regularly.

I got a friend that's never been inside of a gym. He only jogs and climbs. He's ripped.

Take what you want from that, but I'm gonna start doing more climbing.

How do you get started in indoor climbing? Just kind of show up and try it or what?

RE: Indoor rock climbing
In my town the indoor climbing gym has a reputation for being a place where girls go to pick up guys. Hasn't worked for me yet but I'm just started to get back into shape.

Most gyms have a beginner class that will teach you how to belay and the basic moves. That should be enough to get started. Once you climb 5.10+ you should learn how to lead and lead belay. Then you can climb with anybody at the gym. Bouldering also isn't a bad way to get started and doesn't require a partner.

I can belay and tie my figure 8 if I'm climbing. What does "lead belay" mean? I think everything I've climbed is 5.6-5.9 so far.

I may buy some equipment. Their rental harness is made out of seatbelts so a legit harness may be my first purchase. Shoes next I guess...which leads me to another question. Just HOW tight are these shoes supposed to be? I've heard tighter the better...but I've tried a few sizes below normal and can't stand them for more than two minutes. I was a 1/2 or size down last time I think, which was fine. I heard about a guy wearing size 6 when his normal size was a 10 and that it was supposed to be hard to get your foot all the way in...I get it that you want the "talon" effect but that seems absurd.

RE: Indoor rock climbing
Lead climbing is where the rope isn't already fixed at the top of the climb. The lead climber pulls the rope up with him and clips it in as he goes up. The lead belayer has to feed the rope out, give slack when the lead climber goes for a clip, and then bring it in. The lead belayer also needs to be able to call out unsafe moves like back stepping and Z-clipping so it requires some familiarity with climbing.

Edit: the chick in the photo is lead climbing.

It looks like Earth Treks in Rockville. But they all look alike. I only did a date there once. I just did three belayed climbs apiece (with a gym instructor) and then went to the free wall. Do you have any particular ideas about structuring a rock climbing date? It seems like a particularly good active date for the winter, when the other alternatives are bowling, ice skating, or a regular gym.

I don't get it. Indoor rock climbing can be a little expensive. I'm not a "one and done" snob. But by date #3 there had better be alcohol and sexual escalation. I like active early dates to diffuse anxious jitters, do something fun, and bounce. Also I'm not sure what you mean by the "right girl" for this situation.

I agree the woman in the pic is a world-class climber. Very impressive for her to traverse under the horizontal portion and then transition around the corner to the vertical wall.

RE: Indoor rock climbing
Hey, I'm bumping this thread instead of starting a new one.

Been going to a rock climbing gym for a few months now and finding that it has really been getting my upper body ripped. My legs are already pretty ripped from powerlifting when I was younger. My stomach is my weak (read fat!) area so this is helping that area. I am heavier, about 200lb at 5'9'', so I have to lift a lot of weight when I am using only my arms to climb or especially when bouldering.

Also, in my midwestern city where most of the chicks are fat slobs, this place collects thin and athletic chicks. Most of the hard core climber guys are very beta so it is very easy to come in and display high social value, dress a little better, be more muscular, display social skills. I usually talk up a couple of chicks that are hanging out. They often come in twos with a fat one and a skinny one. Just ignore the fat ones.

I am close to Dallas and want to go climb at the gym in Carrollton so anyone that is up for that PM me.

G

Climbing is a great workout and a good way to meet fit chicks. Sadly at the indoor place near my apartment it's all dudes, rock climbing in 2nd tier Chinese cities is a niche thing. But the guys are cool and I practice my Chinese.
