Hey guys

i have been looking for tickets to travel from NYC to Europe(i was thinking london or paris) but
oddly enough i have found the prices for may are really expensive, 1150 dollars roundtrip.
I thought being in the northern hemisphere would be cheap, but from south america seems to be cheaper,( for example rio de janeiro - paris 900 dollars).
What is going on?? are there any low cost airlines between USA and Europe?

depends on airline and season. in low season often RT flights for 500 dollars and under to Moscow,Ireland,Paris,London. If you are going during tourist seasons the prices you see are probably dead on.

What season or month are you going? Have you checked third party sites like http://www.vayama.com, http://www.kayak.com, or rovia.com?

I got lucky in my first couple of trips to Europe. This is obviously when fuel prices were much less during non-peak seasons (Sept-May opposed to June-August)...

September 2009 - Dallas-Athens Roundtrip $550.00 after taxes and fees through Vayama

November 2010 - Dallas-Madrid Roundtrip $463.00 after taxes and fees through rovia.com

Even found a May 2012 deal from Dallas-Buenos Aires for $643.00 through American but the price went back up to $1200-$1400 since I couldn't book.

I would suggest getting on the mailing lists for travel sites and airlines, so that you get info on sale fares. If you're flexible about when you want to travel, you may be able to get some good deals to Europe.

Anything going from US to Europe for around 1,000 is dirt cheap especially in summer (as opposed to 1500) Seems like that is the norm nowadays.

Try a site called FlightFox.com. It allows you to enlist the services of flight finding experts who bid against each other to find you a deal. You can experience significant savings since they apparently use tools that sites like Kayak dont, but you do have to pay a finders fee(40-60 dollars).

Also look into flying to germany. Flights from US to germany are usually cheaper since german and london act like hubs

Sounds about right for Summer season. If they don't already offer this sites like expedia and kayak should allow users to enter travel dates (or date ranges) and then set out searching fares every day/8 hours/whatever is reasonable and email and txtmsg users the current best fares and/or when a flight below a preset $amount is found. It'll prevent you from having to search manually every day for weeks hoping to get the very best fare.

You shouldn't be paying more than $800 to go to Europe round trip. My suggestion is if your target city is expensive to fly into, fly to a cheaper city and train or fly once you get into Europe for much cheaper. Plus that lets you see another city. But regardless, I was looking at prices for Switzerland in the summer and I found flights for under $800, and I would imagine Switzerland (Zurich) is probably more expensive to fly into than most countries/cities in Europe. I think I saw that on onetravel.com. It's always cheapest to travel on Tues. Wed. or Sat.

I was VERY disappointed in flightfox when I give them a rather complex itinerary a few weeks ago. I actually had to write them an email asking for my money back after the process.

I was consistently beating their "expert" fares with a kayak search. After I finished they asked me to choose the best fare, or if I wasn't satisfied with the results to donate to the person who tried the hardest to get you a good fare. Fuck that.

Wow, I guess its not perfect then. I used it to make a round trip from Detroit to San Francisco and clocked in significantly less than what I was seeing on Kayak or Hipmunk. I had to be fairly flexible though so I suppose that plays a part as well.Did you end up getting a refund ? I saw on their site that theyre supposed to refund you if you get shitty options.

Yeah, I got a refund out of it. Maybe I'll give it a shot again someday, but I didn't come away impressed. Great idea, poor execution. Maybe as the site becomes more well known, they'll fix some kinks.
