I agree that you shouldn't be predictable. But you also can't be incongruent.

The easiest way to do that is simply not to tell them. When they ask what I do, I give an accurate but vague response. If they knew what I did specifically, they might pigeonhole me as a nerd. I don't give them that chance. But the general idea of what I do is intriguing.

It can be hard not to be stereotyped right away if you're a minority or just a white guy that looks a certain way.

RE: Never let a girl stereotype you
When wearing a suit, and a girl ask what I do. "I work in Afghanistan". This immediately nukes the hamster, as they already had an idea in their head. Shock and awe wins.

What I've noticed in cities are fashion trends. Dudes looked same in London, Houston, NYC, ect. Most blue collar guys I know dress certain ways, depending on the geographical location. In NYC, a guy suited up at happy hour is going to get pegged for finance, Wall Street, or a lawyer. Don't dress like that.

And it's more than fashion. Being a mechanic is boring, and girls don't want to hear about it. If you dress like a typical wrench turner, girls are going to assume you aren't interesting. And you lost.

Leave work and forget about it. Dress and act differently. Typical plumber get off work, hits the bar, bullshits about sports, ect. Instead, go to an art gallery dressed up.

We all know what a killer it is to talk about your job. Unless it's exciting, which 98% aren't, talk about something else. Like the art gallery. Women will respond better. And you will get laid more.

Don't appear in a way that's stereotypical of your race. If you have an accent, try and correct it.

I wouldn't be the first to say this, but if you're black and worried about girls writing you off as ghetto... don't go out in baggy jeans, timberlands and a flat billed hat with the sticker on it. If you're Hispanic, wearing a mustache and a plaid shirt might make you look like her gardener, while if you were white, it'd make you look like a hipster. You don't have to go all out Carleton

But a little bit is good.

Then again, there are black guys that do, and it works for them.

It also depends on the circumstances. If you're already pre-selected, say you're good friends with the people at a house party, and a girl sees that, you'll have more leeway. You approach her at a bar, she has none of that background info, so all she has is your appearance - your style, how you sound, your mannerisms, your grooming, your face, your body. The reality is, in America, if any of these things seem particularly ethnic, it's usually an indication of lower class. A Latina chick with a thick Chicano accent didn't grow up in high society, same for a black dude who speaks only Ebonics, a Jewish girl that sounds like Fran Drescher, a guido that sounds like Snooki, or a white guy from a trailer home in West Virginia. Unlike a nice French or Spanish accent, none of these even sound attractive, class indications aside.

And all in all, it's something that you have to determine for yourself. Experiment with different outfits and see how girls respond.

The corollary would be that a strategy that never hurts is to play against your stereotype.

If you're a black guy, speak the most neutral-accent English possible and dress like a Southern frat boy.

If you're an East Asian guy, get jacked and act outrageously confident.

While at the tails this may hurt you with hoodrats and FOBs, respectively, this will be easily offset by the gains made with the middle of the cultural bell curve.

Being in Thailand, I get it alot. Women expect me to know how to dance and talk a certain way. They are suprised by the way I dress. All these tourist dress a certain way so its easy to be the best dressed and peacock. Some of the younger Thais and hiphop heads look at me a certain way. All in all im young and black so I throw everybody off. Try finding and under 30 brotha in SEA. That works for me.

I also get the African look which is bad out here. Alot of african cats out here scam and sell drugs. But all the bishes that love blk dick love me so it balances out.

The cycle of disrespect can start with just an appetizer.

CONTRAST GAME.

I don't like to be pigeon holed into a stereotype as a black man. Luckily for me once I open my mouth people know I am pretty smart and my dress sense is on point, which tends to leave people confused.

On top of dressing sharp, try changing up your accent. Depending on where I am, I'll switch from regular northeast/DC suburb accent I grew up with to the southern accent I picked up living down here. Sometimes I'll switch DURING the actual conversation.

For example if I'm on Bourbon Street I use my regular, DC voice because most girls are from other parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama etc. But if it ends up being a tourist from the northeast or California, I'll immediately switch to my southern accent. Exotic = sexy.
