He's a positive saint compared to some of the MSNBC dopes.

Of course, he can be a huge jerk, and and he has his ridiculous hobby horses and is often logic challenged.

But he also raises millions for charity, and he is not afraid of having ANYbody on his show and go toe-to-toe with him. Him vs. Jon Stewart is a ton of fun to watch.

He's pretty alpha it seems to me.

He's pretty alpha in his demeanor I guess, but I would much prefer to go for a drink with Bill Maher. The MSNBC people might be insufferable but they wouldn't throw their (bodyguards) weight around like Bill O'Reilly does to that harmless kid.

It's not a left-right thing, I find Glen Beck pretty damn irritating for example, but I like Alex Jones.

Many years ago he used to do conspiracy type reporting but now he is just a poster boy for fox. I dont agree with his politics but have found myself laughing at this guy because he is such an asshole. And say what you will about assholes but they are at least entertaining to watch.

Whether Bill O'Reilly or the whole lot from MSNBC, it doesn't matter, they're all a bunch of hacks who push their own agenda but claim to be fair and unbiased. They prey on the ignorant people in America who aren't capable of putting together an original thought on a single political or social issue.

I watch this show for the entertainment rather than news or politics. Specifically I enjoy the segments where he brings in a comedian like Dennis Miller or Adam Corolla.

I think they are pretty funny.

I'm certainly not a 'liberal' by today's standards, as evidenced in other threads, however O'Reilly's behavior in that vid I posted is utterly appalling. Calling someone out for that isn't about left-right, it's about basic human decency, especially when one is in the public sphere.

He doesn't like anti-war people, cool, but he shouldn't threaten them with violence because he disagrees with them. Especially after it was him who invited said anti-war guy to discuss the issues. Plus, bringing the guy's dead father into the discussion and using him to shame the son is utterly repugnant behavior from someone in O'Reilly's position.

He's a dickhead, doesn't matter whether he's a socialist, a fascist, a communist etc...

I love Bill O'Reilly. Yeah - he is a dick. But he is like the 'bad guy' in wrestling. He is much more entertaining than the other guys.

You see - whether we like it or not. The whole news agenda (in TV and newspapers) is now completely shallow and part of the entertainment business. And somebody like Bill doesn't hide that. As opposed to the other self-important news guys who are still deluded into thinking they are part of some great tradition of informing the public, and holding the powerful to account.

I would rather have news that is openly partisan and entertaining as hell. As opposed to the PC liberal agenda being pushed on to us in a way that is portrayed as being 'unbiased', 'neutral' and 'objective'.

All TV is dumb these days. Which is why I don't watch it. But - at least with somebody like Bill O'Reilly you will not be mislead into thinking it is anything more than a dumb news/entertainment show.

Look, you've gotta take the good with the bad with these folks. Bill O'Reilly raises millions for charity, and is actually amusing from time to time.

Then on the other hand, you've got Piers Morgan, who brings new meaning to the phrase "sanctimonious pomposity." Or Al Sharpton, who is nothing more than an intellectually empty street corner con-man. Or Ed Shulz, who has the IQ of a flatworm (bet Ed wishes he was as thin as one).

At least Rachel Maddow has insights from time to time (though the way she projects dyke-ness is just ewwww.). And Lawrence O'Donnell has principles -- shitty, stupid principles, but I give him props for at least HAVING some.

As for Bill Maher, well, for every red-pill insight he has, he has swallowed hook line and sinker the preposterous horseshit of left-wing Hollywood. His deep deep cynicism is both refreshing and disgusting at the same time.

I'll go to bat for O'Reilly.

I don't think much of his politics, but even left-wing folks like me gotta acknowledge that his show is—99 percent of the time—a master class in social dominance.

Think about it: O'Reilly is the Yankees/Patriots/Lakers/Duke of cable news. The man's got the biggest pulpit, the most fans, and legions of haters.

Every left-leaning guest O'Reilly brings on his show despises him. They don't want to correct his misunderstandings, or poke holes in his argument, or help him see the light. They want to humiliate him. They want to use their moment in the spotlight to expose him for the ignorant buffoon they think he is.

On top of that, O'Reilly is a generalist debating wonks, crusaders, and true believers. Every time he goes into an interview, the person sitting across from him knows more about the topic than he does. They've spent their careers working on one little issue. They've spent the past three days doing nothing but prepare for their interview with Bill-O. O'Reilly might've spent 30 minutes prepping—after all, he's gotta get ready for his 10 other interviews.

Seems like everything's stacked against O'Reilly—but then how does he fare? Pretty damn well. He controls the frame. He keeps the debate general (guests will invariably know the details better than he does). He controls his emotions—for every O'Reilly blow up, there are 50 guest meltdowns. In the space of two minutes, he can shift from courteous to smug to condescending to impassioned, then back to courteous. His arguments are simple and plainly expressed. He doesn't hedge, waffle, or hesitate. He lets his guests worry over philosophy, contingencies, and ambiguities; meanwhile, O'Reilly sits there with this bemused smile, like to say--



As much as I disagree with him, at my most objective, I gotta figure O'Reilly comes out ahead in 80 percent of his contentious interviews. And even when doesn't win, he sure as hell acts like he did (there's a lesson in that). He is a fantastic at what he does—hence his ratings dominance—and I know for a fact that many journalists on the opposite end of the political spectrum admire his style, if not his content.

In essence, O'Reilly is a testament to how little what you say matters, and how much how you say it does. I'm surprised more guys on here aren't giving him his props for that.

^ Thanks for that insight Louie, I never really looked at it like that. If you've watched the first video I put up though, he really is indefensible in it. Yeah, he may be 'alpha' and stuff, but there's no pride to be had in bullying a younger, naive guest just because he doesn't hold the same worldview as you, and then threatening him with violence when he doesn't compromise his views to suit yours.

However, as you pointed out, he must be pretty damn good at his job to be in the industry, and at the forefront, for so long.
