Got back about ~1 hour ago and realized I'm missing 1 computer, 1 passport, and close to $800 that was in a bank envelope.

Was planning on buying tickets for Sept. trip to Asia in the next few days. Can't remember/never tried to buy a ticket without having a passport in front of me.

Do I need to expedite a replacement? Is there a non-American website I can buy intl. tix from US to Asia & back without a passport number?

I have a strong feeling getting an expedited passport in going to involve a lot of face time.

A quick scanning of Google results yields weak results and yahoo questions from 08.

Anyone have recent experience with this? Post 9/11 ideal, post 2012 is baja supreme.


On another note..

Guns, linux laptop (most expensive computer I own, but has a Linux sticker on it), and old Android phone (easily visibly in an open drawer) are still here.

Everyone should make a photo of their passport and mail it to themselves
or put it on an online drive so you can't lose it, but that doesn't help OP now.

I think you have to go to a passport issuing office if you are in a rush. They might require you to have a ticket causing a bit of a catch 22.

i dont put in any passport information. they dont care until i check in and they ask for my visa

There are expedited shops around. I know my friend went to one at it cost an obscene amount (like 400 dollars processing fee on top of the regular fee), but he got it around 5 days. But considering you have a few months before travel, this shouldn't be an issue.

In the meantime, US embassy would be a good place to go for temporary papers (if needed). You might need a police report...

Most sites don't ask for passport #....

I have never heard of this problem. I buy tickets on Kayak all the time including to Asia and never ever I had to look at my passport. You got tons of time to replace your passport before September. It comes within two weeks max. I am talking about US passport here.

You do not need a passport to purchase the ticket. You just need it when you show up at the airport...

Sometimes they ask for your passport number when you purchase. Even if they don't let you proceed, this isn't necessary. Put in your old number, then when you arrive show them the new one. No problem. They just need *a* valid passport to travel. And at least in Canada you can get them in 3 days with a ticket, or even I just called up and told them I was waiting on the passport to start paperwork for a new job visa, this is after it got rejected once for bad photos, and literally they jumped me to the front of the line, said it was ready the next day.

I wouldn't gamble on this, some air lines can be quite anal when it comes to mismatches from booking and passport.

I know Spanish Law requires you to register your passport when buying a ticket or even signing up for a frequent flyer account on the Spanish carrier Iberia, but this is the exception rather than the rule

But for a US to Asia trip, just purchase the ticket directly from a carrier or a travel engine. You wont have to enter a passport number. Just know your name EXACTLY as it appears on your passport and your DOB. You will be fine.

The only caveat I say is does your old passport have a visa for the country your going to? If this is the case than you should expedite it because it will take time to get a new visa as well.

I've had two passports expedited. One through a Congressman's office, the other through the system. It costs about $225 with the next day air each way. It's easy and should be in your hands in 4-5 days. Don't pay a middleman to do what you can do for yourself.
