What would be the best university in Canada for education, quality of women and overall atmosphere?

P Dog spoke highly of McGill on ReturnOfKings, but I'd like some other opinions from our Canadian members before I make my decision.

Don't do anything in urban Toronto. I'd Avoid UofT, York, Ryerson, etc.

Theres great prestigious universities in smaller cities, for example Western, Queens, McMaster, etc.

UofA looks pretty balling too from what I see here. Easy pussy galore. If you get a good degree (science, math, engineering) you can get a link up straight to the oil industry after.

I wouldn't just go by best university. I would base my choice on the best program. Let me explain. For example, U of T consistently gets ranked as the best university in Canada but different universities have different programs that they are well-known for. York has a shit reputation but it does have a really good business program at Schulich. If you wanna do engineering, I would recommend Waterloo etc.

It all depends on the degree and the program you want to join. The "best university" may actually not have the best program that you wanna enroll in.

I am not quite familiar with Mount Allison. What exactly are you looking for in marketing? Are you looking to get a business degree like BBA, BCOMM or are you just looking for a diploma from a college? If you are looking for business programs where you can major in marketing, look at Rotman (UoT), Queens BComm, Richard Ivey HBA, and York Schulich.

UBC would be good. I believe Sauder has a Marketing program. (Sauder is part of UBC, but more exclusive or something I dunno).

I may have some things I disliked about UBC/Vancouver (girls don't wear makeup and dress frumpy, few on campus parties, people avoid talking to other people, expensive etc), but you really can't beat Vancouver in the summer time, or even the rest of the year, looks wise. UBC is walking distance to some of the best beaches in Vancouver, there are tons of quality restaurants, infinite outdoor activities and on and on

It depends entirely on what you're looking to study and whether its at the undergrad or graduate level, the gold standard for Canadian university rankings has usually been Maclean's magazine's annual univeristy rankings, although in recent years, many universities have boycotted it over biases in the ranking system: http://oncampus.macleans.ca/education/rankings/

I have friends who've studied at McGill and according to many, its not really that great and the school rides on its prestigious reputation. Obviously Canada is a huge country and your experience will depend entirely on where you choose to attend. Some of the best undergrad schools in Canada are in my home province of Nova Scotia (there's something like 11 unis there) with St. FX and Acadia being on top, for business, my Alumni, St. Mary's University is the best business school on the east coast. Mount Allison is a decent school, I have friends who went there but unless you're very active in school activities, you'll be bored to tears in Sackville, NB.

I recommend a smaller school in a smaller city for your undergrad, so the unis in NS are a good choice, another decent one would be Bishops University, which is located in Lennoxville, Quebec, about a 15 minute drive from the city of Sherbrooke (I lived there for a few months, nice city) and 1.5 hours east of Montreal, solid choice. In these smaller towns, you will have a good experience as the towns are focused around the uni and there's a lot of school spirit. Another uni I would recommend just because I like the city so much is the University of Victoria, my cousin went there and she loved it.

If you attend a school in a larger city like Montreal, Vancouver or Toronto, you won't have the same experience. Do your research, there's lots of decent unis in Canada, but some are in some pretty shitty towns: UNBC (Prince George), Brandon University (Manitoba), Lakehead (Thunder Bay), UCB (Sydney), you don't want to end up in those dumps for 3-4 years.

Honestly, I say go East Coast, I know so many people from all over Canada and the world who went to schools there and had a blast, although its not the best place to look for work after graduation.

Nova Scotia:

Dalhousie-Halifax, good science programs.

Saint Mary's: Halifax, Party/jock school.

Mount Saint Vincent: Halifax, 80% women, 20% men, need I say more?

The above three are all in Halifax, my home city, its definitely a party city and very livable, I highly recommend studying in Halifax, I posted a data sheet on the city if you want to search it.

Acadia: Wolfville (1.5 hours from Halifax), party school/jock, consistently ranking in top 5 undergrad schools in Canada.

St FX: Antigonish, (2.5 hours from Halifax), also party school, consistently ranking in top 5 undergrad schools in Canada, one of the coolest school rings I know, the "X-ring"

UCB: Sydney, (4 hours from Halifax), shit school in a shit town, don't go there.

New Brunswick (aka No Funswick):

UNB: Campuses in both Fredericton (nice small city) and Saint John (industrial shit hole), good school.

St Thomas: Fredericton, decent school, very small.

Prince Edward island

UPEI: Charlottetown, decent small school, PEI can be boring but its very laid back and the people are really nice.

Newfoundland:

Memorial University: Its in Newfoundland so you'll be drinking heavily and you may not understand what the locals say, but its a party city in a legendary party town, if you can't get laid there, then cut your dick off. I hear the school is pretty good too.

There's quite a few universities in smaller towns in Ontario but I'm not overly familiar with them, I'd avoid any university on the Prairies. Hope this helped.

Scotian is right on the money about Mcgill, very over rated. I can only speak for schools in Quebec and Ontario and I have to say that Montreal has the upper hand in women and the atmosphere.

UQAM has hands down the hottest and friendliest girls ever plus their campus is right in the cool part of the city. Downside is it is all in french but you can take your exams and write your paper finals in English. They have the nicest campus I ever been too, it is connected to the Arts Center of the city and almost everything is brand new.

Concordia University again in Montreal is pretty good. I know their business department JMSB has recently gone over huge renovations along with a hiring of new and better professors. Definitely worth checking out if you are interested to have a decent degree and are not going to be stuck in some lame Canadian town.

Ryerson University in Ontario has a really good design program, I heard it was one of the best industrial design programs in Canada. My friend goes there his only complaint is that on weekends besides house parties there is not much to do around.

Fuck good luck getting into Sauder unless you're Asian with CCP $$$$.
90% average not good enough for them. Notorious rep for soul draining, although the marketing girls seem fly, another problem in Vancouver schools is that in group work the FOBs will make you go insane.


For a party school without having to face cold winters, check out UVIC, lots of fly Vancouver Island girls, ratio is something like 60/40.

My personal list of schools:
Victoria: UVic
Vancouver: UBC (SFU is a lame commuter school, so are all the other universities/colleges in the region)
UofAlberta
And then a whole bunch of Ontario/Montreal/East coast schools that have been mentioned above by Scotian

In Ontario take a look at the universities south of Toronto, in the neighbouring/smaller cities.

Here is what I know about these schools, as I do go to one of them and I am familiar with all of them:

Laurier: In Waterloo, a university town. Lots to do for students. School itself is fantastic for girls as nearly 65-70% of the population is women. I think they have a decent business program.

Western: In London, a decent sized city. The university itself is huge (50k+ students) and it has several affiliate colleges. Known as the biggest party school in Ontario. Very jock-central, excellent sports teams. Great business program available, and I believe overall they offer great education in most/all fields.

Guelph: In Guelph, very similar to Laurier as it has an excellent ratio. Smaller town as well, so girls would be easier than in London, although the difference is negligible. Excellent bar nights throughout the week that students often frequent in large numbers. I think they offer just decent programs in most cases.

McMaster: In Hamilton, the largest city out of all these schools. Decent party atmosphere, more multicultural than the other schools. If you like Asian girls, this is the place to go. City offers little to lots depending on your tastes, but it does have an excellent bar/club district downtown, which many students frequent on weekends. Known for excellent science programs.

Waterloo: In Waterloo, neighbour to Laurier. Known for its top engineering programs. However, it has the worst ratio in the province. I believe only about 35% of the school is girls. Bad sports teams as well. Basically, avoid unless you are a passionate and aspiring engineer.

Brock: In St. Catherines, a smaller town near Niagara. Known for accounting, and.. nothing else. Decent ratio, if anything this city has going for it is that it is smaller so the girls will probably be used to much less male attention.

To narrow it down by interest overall:

Schooling - Best are Western, McMaster, Waterloo
Girls - Laurier, Guelph
Partying - All schools but Brock/Waterloo

And to narrow it down by size.. I'm not really sure but the clear differences are that Western is by far the largest school at 50k, with McMaster being the second largest at about 30k. All the other schools are small-mid sized, with only Brock being the clear smallest sized one at about 12k (although it is the fastest growing university in terms of students and maybe even size in Ontario, maybe even Canada if I am correct).

So far Acadia, ST FX, St.Marys and Mount Allison are the most intriguing.

Some information about me...I'm a citizen of Russia and I have no interest in staying in Canada after graduation. I plan on working in Russia or continuing my education in either St.Petersburg or Moscow.

Macleans rates Mount Allison as one of the best undergraduate universities (more often than any other university, by far), does anyone have an opinion on Mount Allison besides Scotian?

This is a generalization, but accurate as to what the universities are known for, i.e. toughest and most respected programs:

McMaster - Health sciences
Queens - Commerce (hardest business program to get into canada - fact, not opinion)
Western - Business (but only in Ivey)
Schulich- Business
Brock - Accounting
Waterloo/UofT/Ryerson - Engineering
Ryerson - Engineering
Windsor/McGill - Finance
McGill - Health Sci/Business

Western is all around good, but you will run into a lot of self-entitled females, but it's not as bad as in Toronto. I have however, met some genuinely cool girls at Western which is a bit different then what I'm used to in the bigger cities and shit.

McMaster is also pretty dope and the culture seemed cool for the short time I was there.

sorry but I have to disagree on McGill part - is an awesome place to go to university. I mean just going to school in Montreal in itself would be amazing, the women are unreal, you've got several other universities in the area which creates a nice academic community, incredibly good restaurants and nightlife right at your doorstep, you're near mountains/good outdoor hiking/skiing, etc. But it's not like you're lost in the big city either, actually McGill has a concentrated area around it where everyone lives called the Ghetto, is in the center of town right below Mont Royale too - totally dope location really, cannot be beat. There's also a large international contingent of students you get at McGill bc of it's international reputation (e.g. Americans generally think it's the best university in Canada) so it's got a fairly int'l flavour to it as well.

McGill is amazing but very difficult to get into. Almost every single program requires you to have a 3.5 gpa minimum just be competitive with other applicants. I read a statistic that said the average GPA of acceptance for med students in McGill is 3.8ish. Univeristy of British Columbia is also very competitive but its amazing. UBC is literally like its own little community and theres lots of hot girls around. Ive noticed theres lots of asian people there as well so if you're into asian girls it might be a good place to go. I have a few buddies in UBC and they're having the time of their lives. UBC also has a second campus in the Okanagan. Its located in Kelowna BC. The weather is spectacular and probably the best weather year round out of any city in Canada. The women are fine as fuck there too. I know a couple of girls from high school who went there and I always see groups of hot girls in their Facebook pics. A couple of my best bros went to University of Victoria. From what they've told me theres a ridiculous amount of fine broads in that school but the catch is basically everyone is a hipster. Ive seen Manitoba as well and it was alright but nothing out of the ordinary. Education wise Mcgill is one of the best in Canada. UBC is very good but some programs are not as good there like the dentistry program which is more theory based and lacks the practical component found in other universities. Ive also read that Univeristy of western Ontario and McMaster University have good programs as well but I'm not sure about the atmosphere girl-wise.

If you are looking to do business, then I think you should look at the following:

Western (Ivey)
York (Schulich)
Queens
Maybe U of T

I would consider U of A if you want to capitalize on the western oil boom.

But if you want Bay Street, the above 4 are probably best.

Hit me with a PM if you want to know info on Acadia, SMU or StFx. I have been at all the campuses and know the province very well from living here my whole life.

Off the top I'd recommend Acadia or StFx because SMU is mostly just students commuting from their homes in the suburbs and isn't a full "Uni" experience.
