Foam rolling muscles
Do you guys foam roll your muscles?

Daily, after a workout, etc?

I got a foam roller some time ago because I had very tight quads/hip flexors, and I think it contributed to some slight posture problems. Haven't noticed much change, but my muscles do feel a lot better and it feels great to foam roll.

What are your experiences with foam rolling? What benefits have you discovered?

RE: Foam rolling muscles
Massage of any kind has some pretty compelling benefits on paper for a weightlifting routine. If you have the cash to blow, I suspect you'd get better results from getting a professional massage, but you definitely cannot beat the price and convenience of foam rolling.

I'm unaware of how it compares to swedish/deep tissue massage in terms of mitochondria, recovery, soreness, and overall LBM gain, statistically.

Never tried it myself, but have been thinking about it.
Do you notice that it affects your recovery at all?

I've heard it does help a lot with recovery, I might try it out sometime soon. I like the DOMS though as the only way I know/feel I had a good workout. When I'm limping and walking like a old man the day or two after legs day lets me know I killed them good.

I can't say I have noticed much, but that is because recently I decreased the intensity of my lower body work.

What I have noticed is that it hurts to foam roll certain parts of my quads, glutes, and calves. When I first started it was so painful, now it is a lesser pain. From what I understand the more it hurts initially, the more knots there are in your muscles.

Maybe someone who is more experienced with foam rolling and the science behind what it does for your muscles can correct me, but I believe it increases flexibility and ROM, increases the ease of blood flow, relieves tightness, and relaxes/decreases built up muscle soreness (DOMS).

For the recovery aspect, if it does decrease DOMS (which at its most intense can last 3-5 days) this will allow you to work the body parts more often and allow your muscles to perform at maximum efficiency due to reduced built up soreness.

Besides all that, it feels amazing. And if you really put in time and focus (set aside 20 minutes to foam roll your entire lower body), your legs will feel so fresh and relaxed.

Love it.

I wish I did it more. Haven't done it in a week, but I am doing it tonight before I roll out for sure.

This along with stretching are the two most important parts of working out for me.

Right now I'm using a lacrosse ball to alleviate the pain of sore arches and plantar fasciitus in my feet from taking up jogging again. I have used a foam roller on my back an I.T. band. That shit can be intense. But as I age I realize flexibility and endurance are paramount.

Yeah. Although it's not extreme. I feel the fact that I have about 10 pounds of fat around my midsection might be the reason, though.

That and maybe genetics. My mother has huge lordosis, and my sister has some as well.

I like to foam roll my legs well before doing squats and dead lifts, I also like to use it on my back if it's feeling sore, stiff, etc. I've never tried it after a work out, but definitely recommend it before squats and deads, I've noticed a big difference between when I use the roller and when I don't.

I love all types of massage. I do it on days when my legs feel tight, stiff, and fatigued.

Helps alot with keeping my legs fresh.

I've started getting mild sciatica. Foam rolling is a life saver. When I feel my hip start to seize up I just do a few rolls on the small of my back and it's fixed.

I foam roll before every workout.

One big one is rolling your piriformis, especially before squats.

Also, buy a few lacrosse balls and work smaller muscle groups, they're great.

This is pretty cool. I tend to use most of what he does but not all.
Good for warming up and cooling down before and after a workout. Stretch daily is very important esp if you workout.
