Rep points are a great way to let other forum members know who is valuable. But they are worthless unless you provide links in the rep point to a post that you like.

Let me give you an example.

RioNomad has been a RVF memeber since November, 2011. He has 2,200+ posts and 29 rep points.

RioNomad wrote in a Thailand thread:

Fuck the search feature; it's not reliable enough to find individual posts of wisdom, because often times we post good posts in threads that have undescriptive titles.

Note that this post isn't about RioNomad, but instead, it is about how people give rep points in general... throw in a link for a post of theirs that you liked!

Compare RioNomad's rep sheet to Beyond Boarder's Rep Sheet:


While not every rep point of Beyond Boarder contains a link, enough of them do, making it easy to find out a few good quality posts of his should I want to look up his advice.

Please, everyone on the RVF should make it habit to include links when giving out rep. While you don't need to do it for every rep point, please try to do it as much as possible. It will make things much easier for everyone's future reference.

I'd bet that most people here are compelled to give rep points after reading a specific thread. I think it would be best if they link to that rep-point inspiring thread.

I understand what you're saying with this, but I personally didn't see rep points to only be for that purpose. A lot of the times I've repped someone it's because of their overall contribution and liking just about everything they write. I also think a rep point can be in order when you meet someone in person and want to let the forum know they are the real deal or a standup guy.

I can see putting a link if you repped them due to a particular gold nugget or thread, but sometimes you're reading something and it's just the "straw that broke the camel's back," as they say, or you read a few posts in succession and are reminded of how a certain guy always has a cool perspective.

I think people drop a rep point for different reasons and whether they include a link is usually based on that. But I think you have a good point in that if they refer to a particular post in the rep, that's definitely a time when a link should be included.

Honestly, if the rep points were specifically for highlighting particular posts (I see "likes" to be more relevant there), then it seems the functionality would allow giving more than one rep to a person, right? As it stands, that doesn't seem to be a possibility, indicating to me that it's more about vouching the poster's overall character.

I dont rep someone for a specific post. If I feel they are under appreciated/under repped (gandt, deep diver, WIA, MattC come to mind) and I see continuous posts knocking shit out of the ballpark, I will toss them a rep point.

Sometimes rep should be given on the person in general man.

Like if the person is honestly a cool person inside and outside of the forum, give him a rep for that. Giving out reps for just one certain link is alright, but in all honesty, you can use likes for that shit.

I think reps should also be given whenever meeting someone as an acknowledgement that this person is a functioning human being beyond the realm of the realm of a computer screen. I don't think a person even needs to have top notch game when I meet in person, but the fact that they're willing to put themselves out there is an important part of what makes this place such a valuable resource.

The first time I met a forum member I was thinking, "oh shit, what if my game is poor that day, I'll be pegged as a fraud."

But after a few times I realized we're all just regular dudes trying to get ahead in life.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. You can give a rep for someone in general in addition to a link of a post of theirs that exemplifies what you like about them in particular.

Trust me if everyone did this it would be MUCH easier for new comers to understand why some people have the rep sheets that they do.

I wonder if there is a way to add to the functionality of rep points. Like, a person can give a rep point, and add stuff to it in the future.

Like you would see a rep point from a poster. Click on the rep point, and you could see a list of reasons (met in person, helped me out), or a list of posts and urls.

Is that possible?

Or what if we could search posts based on count of likes? Or backlinks?

I was looking through NASA test Pilot rep to read his posts. With the exception of a few links(QC, Samseau, DRcrotard, Beyond borders), most people didn't link in his reputation report why they rep him. This is a waste. Now, i will have to dig through mountain of posts by him to read his choice posts? All because of a few reppers are too lazy to spend less than 60 seconds to include links to his post that they repped him for?

What are you talking about?

Nobody is saying you shouldn't rep somebody for whatever you like. What Samseau is saying that it is good courtesy and resources feed, if a person repping somebody takes the time to include the post link in their rep. That will make it easier to find good nuggets of gold posts.

None of this gives me stuff to work with. How am I going to know what to search for in the first place? That doesn't tell me anything i can search with. Providing links in rep points helps, giving details and specifics.

One of the thing i like to do is read completely random people's rep points and discover gems. Without links, it makes if more difficult to find gems. It will be labor intensive to find all the good stuff buried under layer of posts. This is also why thread like this is good.

So why don't you instead skim all of his posts using the search bar at the top. Do a search by his username and sort by posts.

Those reps points are like that because he is an all around phenomenal poster. I gave him a rep because of a PM he sent.

If you're too lazy to put in the legwork yourself to find these gems why are you even here? This forum is about self determination, not spoon feeding.
