Very interesting.

The part in the beginning about driving really made me think. I've actually noticed in the past that when I have a nice vehicle I drive more like an asshole - very aggressively.

This study also brings a bit of illumination to how people who suddenly come into money always talk about how their friends treat them different. I've even experienced this phenomenon for myself.

Could it be because they are (I was) suddenly acting like a prick?

On the subject of socioeconomic class and crime:

"It isn't crime, it's poverty"

Many of the "crimes" commited by lower class citizens do so out of necessity, whereas, a lot of the crimes commited by higher class citizens are completely based on their own selfish desires.

$100,000 - $150,000 a year is rich? I'm rich bitches!!!!!!!!!! If I knew that was considered rich, I wouldn't have stopped for all those peons at crosswalks, and I have passed up so many opportunities to steal candy from babies. Shit, I don't even know if I should keep associating with the members here. I'll have to consult my low six figure income on that one.

There is obviously some truth to what they are saying though. It would be nice if they were to actually study wealthy people rather than the upper middle class. I'm not wealthy right now, but I have been close in the past. I admittedly have an ego too, but it's not because I make a certain amount of money. I have an ego because I know that I'm willing to put in the work, take the risks, and make the sacrifices that the vast majority of people out there aren't willing to.

Interesting. Knowing some truly wealthy people I've witnessed in one family in particular, all of this behavior to a magnified extent . It actually made me realize they had to step on some people to get where they are to be acting this way and believe the things they do about themselves. Wealth is nothing more than the redistribution of available net worth in the market in most cases.

Very few will invent something from scratch, and create a market out of nothing.

There have been other studies - I believe one from John Hopkins U - that discovered there is a much lower relationship between IQ, and overall education, and wealth than many of us would believe. Its scary when you discover just how dumb some very wealthy people are. Yet there is an attachment applied by society that if you are wealthy, you must be a genius.

As a general rule, I expect intelligent people to do something worthwhile and beneficial with their time, rather than spend all day harvesting meaningless commodities..

RE: Take Two 'Normal' People, Add Money To Just One Of Them, And Watch What Happens Next
There is this quote by Albert Goldman, “No man is really changed by success. What happens is that success works on the man’s personality like a truth drug, bringing him out of the closet and revealing… what was always inside his head."

I know some wealthy people and they are humble as fuck.

People when they think they have made it just don't feel the need to hide what an asshole they are is all.

Update: I saw the quote when I watched a documentary called "Overnight" about the director, Troy Duffy, of "Boondock Saints" - If you ever wanna see a movie about someone self destructing, buying his own bs and hurting his friends, this is it. If you don't have the time - just read the quote below from a review.

Quote:It’s no wonder Miramax backed out before filming began, leaving the picture in limbo until Franchise Pictures picked up the reins. Duffy accepted Franchise’s deal for half the budget that Miramax offered; and when Miramax walked away, Duffy was required to return nearly a million in director’s and production fees back to the Weinsteins.

But Duffy dug his own grave. Arguably the biggest, most influential force in Hollywood in the late 1990s, Harvey Weinstein had made an instant celebrity out of Duffy, a blue-collar Average Joe. Celebrities like Mark Wahlberg and Jeff Goldblum were talking about the potential greatness of Duffy; the media called him The Next Big Thing.

But when the deal failed to materialize as soon as he would’ve liked, Duffy publically insulted Weinstein. He boasted “I’m Hollywood’s new hard-on,” and bragged about his success before his agreement solidified. He openly said Harvey Weinstein “wants to be me” and “he’s afraid of me.” Meanwhile, beer in his hand, in his overalls, Duffy continued to wait for Miramax to call...

At first, the local press covered his story as a rags-to-riches tale, and then it became a rags-to-rags warning about how up-and-coming filmmakers shouldn’t behave. Overnight shows Duffy shouting at his film’s experienced producer as though he’d been in The Biz for decades. He claims his family and coworkers don’t “deserve” money for their work, that he has done everything. He later bullies those close to him when they confront his lacking business decisions and tact.

Fate whispers to the warrior, "You cannot withstand the storm." And the warrior whispers back, "I am the storm."

About nice cars... The truth is, nice cars are fast, driving fast is fun, and you don't want your "speed combo" to be broken by a "puny pedestrian".

Not sure where I heard it, but a similar concept I picked up is that money acts as an amplifyer. If you're fundimentally an asshole, then with money you can be a bigger asshole because you don't need to hold back on account of kissing up or needing a job.

Alternitively, if you're good-hearted, then with money you can do more, be more generous, spend your time fostering kitties etc because you don't need to work.

This seems fake, or at least not based on "science".

The researcher obviously has a bias... he's either acting or full of shit.

I would tend to believe that rich people are meaner, but the "studies" in the clip are a joke. The candy part looked fake as well.

These facts are a compete joke. The vehicle part is beyond stupid as most people driving bmw's and fancy car have that on credit, so really they are driving cars that are driving them insane financially. Don't you guys remember the cool kids back in school with their low riders and raised trucks with spinners.

When is the last time a poor person helped you get a job? That's right, never.

Now go and tell me all rich people are assholes.

The rich people who are portrayed as dicks usually have fucked up personal lives. If you're rich you are carefree and have no reason to be a dick.

These studies just make it easier to rationalize paltry results.

"Being rich makes you unhappy! Therefore I don't need to make money! See I am smart! See!"

Also, a luxury car does NOT mean the person is rich. I feel like the clip doesn't even deserve an intelligent response because it's so full of holes.

Also income does not mean you are rich as well.

Rich is working assets.

So what if you make $500K a year? If you're burning it all hand over fist you're STRESSED the fuck out. So that's why you're an asshole.

People just assign arbitrary income as rich show me a guy who lives off of his investment income (dividends, rental properties etc - not levered up to his eyeballs) and has no stress that is an "asshole". Not going to happen.

It's nonsense.

The study was done in California where everyone is completely full of shit. The people who did it are full of shit and made the outcome what they wanted. Someone needs to study them.

A much wiser man once said that the difference between rich and poor people is that poor people work for money and money work for rich people.

x10000000.

While I do live in an area that's a bit better off, BMWs, Audis, Mercs, and Acuras, and Infinitis are a dime a dozen here. The reason? Low mileage leases that are relatively cheap. We're talking the upper $200- low $300 a month payments for the entry level ones. To finance them would be much more.

RE: Take Two 'Normal' People, Add Money To Just One Of Them, And Watch What Happens
Kind of a derail but I had a bit of an epiphany today.

I've always wanted an M3. Or at least a 335is. Today as I was driving to work there was some dickhead in an M3 next to me pretty much flooring it at every light, getting a few feet ahead of me, and then we'd meet up again at the next light. At one light he floored it and a truck pulled in front of him and I passed him. I was doing as well or better than him in my little altima coupe. There's not a single place where you can let a car open up in L.A. unless you're on the freeway at 2:30 AM or on Sunset blvd late at night.

And honestly, if I had an M3, I'd probably drive just like that dickhead. I love driving, I'm addicted to speed, and I drive like a goddamn maniac given the opportunity.

But every time I see a supercar in L.A. I just can't see the point, and they're everywhere here. I'll see a 911 turbo S driving along san vicente, just getting torn up by the fucked up 3rd world roads. . For the dudes that take their car to the track okay, but how many of them really do that. Everyone and their cousin has a BMW or Merc so there's no status boost there. I'll see dudes roaring by me every once in a while and then see them at the next traffic light. You can't even drive fast on PCH anymore because there's so much traffic and speed traps out there.

If I lived somewhere wide open like Arizona or Texas I'd definitely get a muscle car but in L.A. it literally makes no sense. Here it's better to have something small and highly agile...I'm thinking about a 370z for the next ride.

"...so I gave her an STD, and she STILL wanted to bang me."

I agree. If I ever lived in the city I wouldn't have a car period. Not just to save money, but you really can't "drive" a car in a city. My car is a manual and it is at times a pain to drive in the city with it. You can't open it up at all.

Here's the question to ask: how many people making six figures are going to take the day off and volunteer to take part in an experiment?

Almost all psych experiments are performed using college kids, which makes sense when you consider that these experiments are done by professors at universities. These kids are reporting family income, not their own.

And maye it's true that people who drive luxury cars are more likely to break traffic rules, but as others have pointed out that doesn't say much about the rich. There are lots of people who are rich exactly because they drive moderately priced cars and lots of people are struggling because they blow a quarter of their take home pay on a car note.

@thedude

Do you want to own a sports car or do you really just want to experience it?

I would go race tracking and pay up to drive a high end car just for the thrill, flooring it etc etc, you'll get your high then realize you don't actually want to own that thing.

The very rich and the very poor are both unbounded by conventional morality and should be avoided or at least dealt with very carefully.

The poor man has nothing to lose. You get into a street fight with a guy with a neck tattoo...you think he cares if he pulls out a knife and goes to prison?

You deal with a rich fuck...He will cheat you because he has the law on his side. "So sue me," he'll say, and it'll cost you a lot of money to get a fraction of what you are owed.

Look at Jon Corzine for an example. That guy should be behind bars. He won't ever be, as the rich are rarely prosecuted for anything. At most they face civil fines.

Stand-up, honest, ethical people are generally in the middle class.
