How to never pay the United Airlines $75 close-in booking fee
For those that travel a lot using United Airlines frequent flyer miles, this may be helpful:

Normally, united.com charges a $75 fee for award tickets issued within 21 days of travel.

Here's how to never pay it when you need to travel within a few days: First, book an award ticket more than 21 days in advance, to a similar destination. Then, within 24 hours, "change" that ticket to the itinerary you really want. Since United allows for free changes/cancellations within 24 hours, this means you won't pay the $75 fee.
