RE: Books on Self-development
A useful book is "The Mystic Masters Speak!" by Vernon Howard. The book attempts to compile the wisdom of the ages for leading a better life. It is arranged by topic chapters, and each topic is composed of a set of philosophical questions and answers provided by great thinkers, philosophers, politicians, authors, etc., that address those particular questions.

Here is an example, from the chapter on fear.

Question: How can I dissolve my fears?

Answer: If men who do not understand life would only approach nearer to the phantoms which alarm them, and would examine them, they would see that they are only phantoms, and not realities. (Tolstoy)

The book has a huge number of quotes (283 pages) and is a good reference to just pick up and read at random.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's autobiography is a good one. He talks about his whole life and really gives a sense of the incredible drive that is required to be successful. Of course, it wasn't written as a self help book, so you have to draw your own message out of it - such as find a passion and fully invest yourself in it, as well as keep changing what you do to stay relevant and reflect your current strengths.

RE: Books on Self-development
I'm not a huge fan of self help books, for most people it fills their brains with too much information and they get into an analysis paralysis feedback loop (keyboard jockeys). That's probably why so many self-help books have been written and sold, none of them work.

That being said, Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Quit Smoking" is pretty good, it's almost a sort of hypnosis that deconstructs the need for a cigarette, and "No More Mister Nice Guy" is good to read and analyze your own behavior and outlook so you can better cull worthless personality and behavioral traits. You might think that you're easygoing and friendly before reading NMMNG, afterwards you can consider that maybe you're setting yourself up to be some kind of rage-filled bastard, paradoxically a grinning pushover and yet incapable of tolerating the least slight.

Another two, in order of greatness, are Jamie Lewis (of Chaos and Pain) "Annihilate the Opposition" and "Issuance of Insanity, both great books on lifting. Read them and prosper.
