Whats yalls opinion on this? Anyone have experience with teaching in latin countries? I really wanna do this for a year, just for the experience and it will really improve my spanish. Any advise or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I know some guys that have done it. They didn't save shit and basically lived check to check, but all of them had a great time. I wish I would have done that like 6-8 years ago, but now it's simply not possible for me.

Dude..pick a place and go. As long as you're in a city somewhere,surround yourself with decent people you will be ok and of course you will call mucho attention for bieng foreign and meet many women. I personally would avoid places like Costa Rica, Medellin Colombia, Rio, simply because there are probably already tons of gringos teaching English there.

English teachers are always in demand in Colombia, but typically pay shit! The benefits is what you want - the latin women. Banging students does not seem to be frowned upon so long as you are not a prick about it and display it publicly.

Now, keep in mind you cannot just show up at the door of Colombo English Institute or Berlitz and say "I want to teach English" (And bang hot latinas). You must have a teachers credential, and in particular, have an English as second language teaching credential. Then, the school will sponsor your work Visa for 2 years.

That's where private teaching/tutoring as an alternative comes in - place an ad in the newspaper, drop your price in half, and they will come to you. Make sure you specify you are gringo and which English you teach (UK OR US). This gives her the added benefit of flexible schedules, at a reduced price.

I am a part-time private English tutor in Miami, and it has worked wonders for me banging latinas and brazilian women on the side. I could care less about the money, but damn, the girls that call me up from Brazil and all of Latin America are incredible. I normally just keep 5 students at a time, no more....it has worked well for both myself and the student for close to 2 years.

from reading online if english is ur first language and you have a college degree you can get hired at a college/university or language school without a certificate.

It also says i should send an email with my resume to all the places and that should yield half that in interviews with a few on the spot job offerings

I couldn't tell you the best country to teach english, but I can tell you what I know about teaching English in Brazil, I had plenty of friends that tought down there.

The pay is gonna be around US$8 perr hour, or R$15-16. You don't need shit for crudentials. You don't even have to speak Portuguese, they will just throw you in an advanced class where the students already know a good amount of English. It might be hard to pick up 40 hrs. a week, you might be looking at more like 20-30 if you're lucky, but there are always exceptions. What I'm thinking of doing that hopefully pays more is getting a job in a hotel out here that also has a hotel somewhere in Brazil and transfer. I think teaching english just doesn't pay well enough in Latin American countries.

i aint looking to get rich doing it. as long as i had enough to live and go out like once a week for a few drinks ill be fine. id be doing it for the help in learning spanish and banging some latinas

I'm currently doing this.

I'm in a CELTA course in Bogotá, Colombia. CELTA is a certification to teach English, pretty much the gold standard of such certs but the course is 8 hours a day for a month and costs $1500 here, up to $3,500 in the U.S.

Anyway, a nice appt w/ utilities can be had for $200-$300 a month here. An English teacher can easily earn $1,000 a month, up to $2,000 a month if you hustle hard and get private students.

You CAN save money, but you probably won't be in the mindframe to do so. When everything is cheap somehow you end up spending even more money cause you think it's not a big deal to simply go out for meals and buy random shit here and there.

Basic medical insurance can be had for like $10 a month all throughout Colombia, so that's a plus.

Dunno per-se about the situation in other cities, but rent in Bogotá is MUCH more expensive than most other places, so I assume you'd get a simmilar ratio of rent to pay as long as you go somewhere with an economy that includes a fair amount of students and professionals. Rich kids and businessmen are the bread-and-butter of the business down here.

This is an ESL teachers' forum. Based on reading that it seems that in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina you can expect to get paid little more than your appt will cost.

I'm teaching English in Sao Paulo and there is a big demand for native english speakers here. I get anywhere from R$35-50 an hour teaching in company classes. If you hustle you can make decent money but I'm not working a ton of hours since I saved up some money and I make enough to get by. As for commuting around the city to companies it is a pain in the balls. Check http://www.gringoes.com it has classified adds for schools looking for english teachers. Damn, that's mad loot for Brazil. The classes I was talking about were in Vitoria. The only problem with your classes is you have to deal with living in Sao Paulo. I would much rather live in Miami to tell you the truth. And it looks like all these adds are for Sao Paulo. It's hard to believe you are making that much, I don't even make that in the states, and probably more than most English teachers make in the states (At least R$50/hr). They must only offer 20 hours or less a week, right? And you're right, good luck trying to get around Sao Paulo. If you think NYC is bad, just type Sao Paulo into google images. Sao Paulo is NYC built up half as high, but 5 x more spread out. It's sky scrapers as far as the birds eye can see, and then some. Im not really big on outdoorsy stuff ect. and museums

All i need in a city is plentiful good looking women, decent nightlife thur - sat, decent mall and a movie theatre, and a gym. A beach is always a plus.

I wouldnt have to have a certification because I have a college degree, but from what im reading is that certifications are def a plus (TESOL & CELTA ect)

Do you have a job already lined up for when you complete the CELTA course or are you just gonna send out resumes after? If i could make 1k a month base and then extra for private lessons that would be great. enough to pay rent and for going out alittle bit.

So is Colombia the best latin country where the pay for teaching is best in comparison to how much it cost to live there? Being payed just enough for rent is not an ideal situation.

Dash Global..All the cats I have known to teach English in Colombia with College degrees AND CELTA certification do not make much. I never understood the logic behind this, one guy spent a fortune for his college degree in Finance, and probably owes students loans in excess of 70kUSD, yet decided to make 1500/mo in Colombia - go figure. I am not sure that you get any more Latina pussy by being a struggling teacher as Colombianas LOVE status, and dating a gringo English teacher is NOT status. However, dating the international playboy with women chasing him everywhere traveling the world is status to a latina.

Another cat I know tried doing this in Taiwan, he returned to the US (jobless) after 2 years, but on the plus side, he lost about 80lbs of body weight. =)

I can never teach English as my main bread and butter for 2k/mo (if you're lucky)- I'd go bankrupt.

The areas I'm familiar with are La Candelaria and La Macarena.

La Candelaria is the historical center of Bogotá, and home to a TON of Universities. It's the hostel capital of the city, and has lots of museums, theater, and cheap food. Standard attire is a leather jacket and jeans, a standard beer costs $1.

La Macarena is where I live, about 10 blocks north of La Candelaria it's a bit up the mountain. It's young and a bit richer, with lots of trendy restaurants, foreigners and pretty expansive parks around. Bogotá girls LOVE walking through the parks since most of the city is so grimy. My area doesn't really have bars but lots of restuarants may as well be bars on Friday and Saturday night.

These are the areas where a ''nice'' appt can be ahd for $200-300. If you're able to shell out $500-600, you can get a beautiful place here that really sets you apart.

Though there isn't really a huge club scene and most of the elite restaurants are further north, in the 80's and 90's. You may have heard of Centro Andino, La Zona T, La Zona Rosa or La 93, that's where ''la gente play'' hang out.

That region is more of a G area, wheras I'm in more of a student/backpacker area.

Depends on your POV. If you are in Bogota and want to live like a pimp, then bieng an English teacher won't cut it. Of course, if you don't mind rocking T-shirts instead of pricey suits, renting a room in an apt or house that is shared with other dudes, taking the train/bus because you don't own a car and not getting bottle service at top notch clubs, you will be fine.

Perfect for a guy right out of college. I wish I would have done that, deferred my loans for a year and went to Colombia or Brazil and taught English. Instead at that time like a fucking idiot I was dating some lame loud mouth American bitch that I thought I was going to marry like a good ole American boy should ....boy what a few years will teach you.

I have a college degree too, as does everyone in my CELTA course.

I can't say Colombia is the best country, because the situation varies by city-to-city, but you can definitely get by.

The problem is that as a new teacher, you will probably only get hourly contracts, which can be changed any time as your institution gains or loses contracts with businesses. So to make that $1,000 you'll need to be working AND having private students from the get go.

im going to cali colombia for the huge salsa festival at the end of december so im thinking about just staying and getting CELTA certified.

@Brandon E it depends some classes I get R$35 an hour and some I get $45-50 an hour if there are multiple students in the class. I only work about 18 hours a week. You could make pretty good money if you worked for numerous organizations that do in company classes. I only work for one. I agree Sao Paulo is no Rio but I like the nightlife here more than Rio.
