So evidently an Indian-American woman was crowned Miss America 2014. It's blowing up my Facebook feed this morning. A lot of people seem to have a problem with this.

(CNN) - No sooner had the tiara been placed atop her head than a barrage of racist tweets flooded the Internet.

"If you're #Miss America you should have to be American," said one.

"WHEN WILL A WHITE WOMAN WIN #MISSAMERICA? Ever??!!" screamed another.

Nina Davuluri is American. She just happens to be of Indian descent. In fact, she's the first Indian-American to be crowned Miss America.

But the tweets that followed the 2014 pageant in Atlantic City on Sunday night didn't focus on how it's the second consecutive year that a Miss New York has taken the crown, or about the judge's questions (including ones about Miley Cyrus and Syria).

They were about Davuluri's heritage.

"Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must've made Obama happy. Maybe he had a vote," vented one person.

Not that it bears pointing out, but Davuluri's not a Muslim -- and the president didn't have a vote.

The 24-year-old Davuluri, who's from Syracuse, competed on a platform of "Celebrating Diversity through Cultural Competency." For the talent portion, she performed a classical Indian dance fused with Bollywood moves.

"The liberal Miss America judges won't say this - but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values. #missamerica." That was Todd Starnes, host of Fox News and Commentary.

This is a trend. Something happens (Indian Miss America, interracial couple in Cheerios commercial, black people in The Hunger Games, etc.). People start saying racist things on Twitter or on YouTube and then you get these news stories about the "reaction."

Real live journalists at actual media outlets regularly wrote stories about people's Twitter comments. How absurd is that?

I have a couple conspiracy theories:

1. The judges may have been incessantly trolled until they gave in and chose the Indian girl as winner.

2. It could also be a ploy to divert IRT's attention away from white women.

IRT's are probably more pissed off about this than anyone. They want them some blonde hair blue eyed white women for Miss America.

I wonder if a blonde hair blue eyed white woman could win miss India if she were born there? It may start a civil war.

Pageants are as real as boxing or NASCAR. Just turn the tele off and that shit don't exist. None of this has an impact on your life, so why follow it?

I don't think she's the prettiest of the bunch, but I have nothing against Indians, Muslims or whatever, and I'm happy that she prevented that tattooed girl from Kansas from being first. Bravo, Nina!

Yeah. Not like they ever pick the most attractive girl out of the bunch anyway. Apparently they look at "intelligence" as well. Being of Indian descent, Nina had a huge leg up there.

They don't care about intelligence or knowledge more than poise and grace. They look at how well you're able to maintain composure and make people feel good about what you're saying. If you look at the shaming language commentators closest to the pageant use when , you'll see variants of "awkward" and "embarrassing" more often than "stupid" or "ignorant". Of course you will see the words "stupid and ignorant," too, but the big crime, in Pageant-world, is stumbling awkwardness that makes people feel uncomfortable.

It's also probably highly conformist and diversity being very fashionable at the moment, people feel really good about seeing ethnic-Americans winning something like this. It's a reflection of that culture, which you all should be familiar with, but beyond that I don't think it signifies much.

Yeah, at that point the only thing those girls wanna do is get off the stage and make their boyfriends miserable for the next few days screaming, crying, raging, and generally throwing temper tantrums. I call it "entitlement denial rage". THAT'S what I would tune in on the tv. Real life unscripted drama.

I'd guess a pretty blue eyed blonde would automatically win Miss India. This Indian Miss America is way too dark skinned for Indian tastes and she would probably get nowhere near Miss India finals which are always full of the lightest girls you can possibly find in South Asia.

Most of the girls in Miss India contests would effortlessly pass as white in America. Hell, the actual winner of Miss India is exceptionally dark for these girls - she actually has brown eyes and her skin is dark enough that she might be from Southern Italy.

We should be happy that IRTs are the way they are, otherwise they'd come in millions and steal all our blonde, blue eyed, tattooed women

Criticism about people posting about miss America being Indian and not world affairs yet the reporter DID a story on this?

I'm sorry but she doesn't accurately represent American women at all. When you think of Miss America it should be "This is the best possible example of what women look and act like in America".

For now ...America is mostly a white conservative Christian country. I'm not a huge fan of Miss Kansas shown above but she's closer to the mark. I don't think she should win either. Showing tattoos like that on the national level is pure trash.

This is no longer a "Hottest piece of ass" contest that it once was.

Whites and conservatives may dominate where you live, but they're not anymore representative of America than my fat Mexican liberal neighbor. Or my Korean neighbors that look at me like I'm gonna rob them.

I agree with you. But the bulk of the population is in the center of the country and the demographics there are much different than where you live. Your town is the exception not the rule.
