The main thing to be aware of is that there are significantly higher risks for company accounts. Consumer protection rules only apply to consumers, not businesses...

For debit cards, you can mitigate the risks by having a current account (linked to your card) and an interest account. Keep the balance on the current account as low as possible to avoid getting scammed. If the accounts are with the same bank, transfers are usually processed instantly and can be ordered on your phone.

I have about 6 cards with various banks (mainly for different currencies but also as backup against loss/theft). Some I leave at home and I usually carry the others in different pockets in case I get held up.

I've seen a few of these things on gas pumps. Even when I don't see it I always try to pull the things off with my hand just to make sure it's not a skimmer.

Seems like the takeaway here is if you insist on using a card, use a credit card, never a debit. Or just pay cash- much safer and easier to track your spending that way.

I received a text today saying "Urgent Notification: Call xxx-xxx-xxxx" and it gave the name of my bank, which is a very well known nationwide bank. I get all kinds of texts every day, but when I hear theirs "bank," I tend to react immediately, so I called the number. It was an automated system saying that my debit card had been suspended, but that I could reactivate it if I provided all of my card information. I went ahead and provided my information, then received confirmation that my card had been reactivated. I then started thinking that this might have been a scam to get my card information. I googled the number, which was a local number, and nothing came up. Any thoughts?

Its a classic scam similar to how they hitch World of Warcraft accounts or bank accounts over email.

Before I do that, I want to contact the bank to see if what happened was legitimate or was a scam. The automated system I called did use my bank's name and the text I received obviously connected my phone number with my bank, so if it was a scam, there was some degree of sophistication.

No dude, there was no sophistication. They just picked a popular bank that you're a member of, I seriously can't believe you were so gullible.
