I have the weirdest problems. After court this morning, I decided to stop for an early lunch. I parked in a parking garage, turned off the ignition, popped the trunk, took a supplement which was in my trunk, closed the trunk, walked across the street, and ate lunch. After lunch, I realized that I did not have my car keys on me. I asked the people working in the place where I had lunch if they found a set of keys and they said they hadn't. I completely retraced my steps and didn't find anything. I most likely locked my keys in the trunk, but I'm not sure. I called my insurance company and they said that they could send someone to open my trunk. Emergency road service is on the way. If my keys are locked in my trunk then problem solved. If my keys are not in there, then how do I go about getting a replacement key? My understanding is that if you know the VIN number and the key code you can get a locksmith to make a new key. How can I get my VIN number if I'm locked out? If I have the VIN number, can I get the key code? How?

Depends on what kind of "key" you have. If it's a key in a key fob that can open your car remotely, you will likely have to get a new one from the dealer. They can be pricey.

Depends on the car and the locksmith

Do you have AAA?
You can call them or you can call a tow truck and have them slim jim your car. Once inside, pop the trunk.

My brother does it all of the time. But most tow trucking companies will slim jim your car for you.

Shit, I've done this a couple times.

Depends on the make/model of car.

Thankfully, with the 2 cars it happened with me, they were regular keys, so the locksmith came out and cut me a key on the spot.

Cost? $300 each time.

For newer cars/keyless etc will be more and has to be ordered from the dealer I believe.

I took care of it. The road service guy was able to open the driver's side door and I was basically able to crawl in the trunk. I couldn't find my keys in the trunk. I have no idea what happened to them. A locksmith had to show up and make me a new key. The key needed a chip, which made the process longer and a little more complicated. I've been driving for nineteen years and this is the first time this has happened, so I can't really be to angry about it.

Don't feel bad. I got drunked up and against my better judgement ended up at some random couples house. I think they were going to try and poke my butt or whatever weird shit and bounced, leaving my keys. It took about an act of congress to have another cut and I still don't have a fob.

Did you actually fall asleep at that place where you left your keys? I had a roommate in college who one time got drunk, got naked, woke up in some random girl's bed, and the next morning had no idea where his clothes were. He called me the next morning and said, "Come to X dorm, room Y and bring some clothes for me." When I showed up, this guy was in the girl's bed with the covers pulled over him with the dumbest look on his face.

Somehow with me, no matter how much alcohol is involved and no matter where I wake up, I always wake up with my keys, wallet, and personal identification stuff. The ridiculous things always seem to happen to me when I'm sober.

I would suggest you make a copy. Take the key to a locksmith, it will cost about 60 bucks(still a lot better than 300).

Always have at least one backup set of all of your keys in case this happens.

I forgot to call the locksmith "IRT" in your honor, especially since he was Eastern European and not Indian.
