Gents,

Mark Ames has been mentioned before on RVF several times. I have posted his Whore-R Stories, his meditations on misogyny, and his thoughts on Minsk in the 1990s. Interestingly, Russia Today hired Ames to do a series of travel documentaries called Wayfarer with Mark Ames. There are 22 episodes, shot all over Russia. Here are 5 of them:

• Ekaterinburg (2006): "Mark Ames travels to Ekaterinburg, the historic and economic centre of the Urals. It was founded in 1723 by Tsar Peter the Great and named after his wife, Catherine. The last Russian Tsar Nicolas II and his family were assassinated there by the Bolsheviks on July 16, 1918. In Ekaterinburg, Mark visits strange monuments and sculpture exhibition. He also gets inside a film production company where he tries to apply for a job. Also, Mark attends a rock festival, as the city is considered to be the capital of Russian rock-music."
  

• Karelia (2006): "Mark Ames travels to Karelian republic, situated in the North-West of Russia. There he learns how to cook a fish soup called ukha, tries extreme rafting and plays a kantela, a Karelian harp."
  

• Sochi (2006): "After a year-long journey around Russia, RT's Wayfarer Mark Ames finally makes it to Sochi - the country's main sea-side resort. He looks at how Russians spend their time and money on vacation. He also has a good look at himself -- in Stalin`s mirror."
  

• Tatarstan (2006): "Mark Ames travels to Tatarstan republic where he visits the largest truck-factory in Russia, KAMAZ, the oldest Kremlin in Kazan and discovers new parts of the national cuisine."
  

• Vladivostok (2006): "Join Mark Ames on his tour of Vladivostok, the largest Russian port city on the Pacific coast. Its name means ruling over the east, and it was originally built as a border stronghold in the Far East of the Russian empire. Mark visits the largest local yacht club, Seven Feet. He also goes to an old fort which houses the city's Naval Museum. The city's used car market, called the Green Corner, where second hand vehicles from Japan are sold, also attracts his attention. Finally he investigates the influence of Chinese culture on Vladivostok, from dragon boat racing to the wide choice of Asian restaurants in the city."

wow should be interesting. His "Whore-R" stories were a must read back in the days when the eXile was really doing some groundbreaking stuff.

Sort of suprised that state-owned Russia Today is giving him a job given the government essentially shut down the eXile. But good for him.

RT is not giving Ames a job. RT gave him a job back in 2006. The eXile was shut down in 2008. More recent Wayfarer episodes, such as this one in Novosibirsk in 2007, no longer feature Ames.

Good stuff, although a lot bit more tame than Ames normally is.

Once Russia got too tough for him, he fled to New York with a nice little trophy from Moscow;

Mark Ames also raped a drunk 15 year old girl, and wrote about it in his book. other staff members of exiled also admitted that he was in fact the "guest" persona "Johnny Chen" who once wrote this, about a different situation:

I carried her almost straight out to the coat check, then hurried her down to a taxi, ran her home, up my stairs, and into my apartment. The whole time she was begging me to take her back, to be careful, she was drunk, bla-bla-blah... After we were through, I had no idea what to do with her. She was bleeding and crying. As for me, I was depressed. I'd just shot a load large enough to repopulate North Korea. So I walked her over to my balcony, and held her in my arm, leaning her over the ledge.

"Throw her over," Johnny Jr. advised me.

"What?"

"You know you want to," he said. "Just pick her up and throw her over. You'll feel better, I promise."

But I didn't have the energy..."

This thread is about Ames's travel documentaries, not about the skeletons in Ames's closet.

Maybe I am weird, but I respect a man who reveals the existence of at least one skeleton. Men with immaculate pasts are terrifying: either they are perfectly moral, or they are amazingly good at covering their tracks. Which is scarier?

Johnny Chen was a fictional character satirizing the notion that any foreign John in 90s Moscow could live a Hugh Hefner lifestyle.

If a well-known Berkeley-educated writer with aspirations of writing for American publications in the future were to rape a 15 year old dyev, do you seriously think he would write about it in a book?
