RE: Going on the lam
The threat of being imprisoned even for a couple of days for not paying a civil judgment in the USA is very low. Just look at OJ before he went to prison on that other thing, he evaded the Goldmans' judgment for years and lived well.

Arrests for civil process in the USA are usually privately done - the creditor has to get the order from the court and pay a deputy sheriff or constable to arrest the person. Police in most jurisdictions have no interest in collecting private debts. The worst that usually happens is the debtor is brought before the court the next day, told to pay the money, and then let free. It's a pain in the ass for the creditor, costs a few hundred dollars, and is usually not worth it.

If it's a fine or a condition of probation attached to a criminal judgment, that's another matter. It would only make a difference if it was a felony with a substantial sentence, otherwise it would probably to be worth it to do the time in the county jail. If you took off for failure to pay on a felony charge, you would have a felony warrant that would possibly keep you from renewing your passport, traveling, collecting social security when eligible, etc.

RE: Going on the lam
They got this guy for not paying child support. Must have been a huge amount for it to be over $1million. As I read the article again, I don't think they came after him, he just got unlucky using false papers to travel to the Phil after he had been successfully living in Thailand for a long time. If I remember right, he got in trouble in Thailand and had to flee from there as well. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/1-de...-1.1223294

I'd sale to south-east Asia and regain land in Cambodia or something. Somewhere with a less than reliable immigration control system. Then I'd head up to Laos and disappear for a while and plan my next course of action.

Excellent idea. I've been wanting to get into sailing for awhile. This would be the easiest way to leave the country without alerting any authorities.

I don't think this is a problem if someone is leaving the country forever. But you could wire money to a few casinos, buy chips, and cash them out slowly or surreptitiously.

You can do the same with diamonds

Watches and jewelry will lose most of their value. Bitcoin is interesting, because it fits on a thumb drive. You could have a friend hold the money and send it. Smuggling cash is a distinct possibility. You could mail yourself a few packets. They need a search warrant to open U.S. mail.

If you are on a budget and need to get out without there being any record, a lot of boats that need additional crew will take you on. You won't get paid as an amateur, but they'll probably feed you. The trick is finding a boat headed somewhere that won't create an easily followed paper trail. i.e. any country without a centralized computer record system; somewhere that issues paper visas on arrival, but doesn't have a database that keeps track of them. I assume that Cambodia falls into this category, considering what I've seen at Cambodian borders, but I'm sure their would be others as well.

If the Mexican authorities discover his cash, they may also confiscate it (legally or illegally).

So, why take that risk when there are legal ways to transport that much wealth?

Not the kind of watches that I am talking about. At most, you will lose the difference between the retail and wholesale value if you sell to a high-end jeweler. That is the cost of doing business, i.e., anonymous transport.

The kind of watches that I am talking about will actually increase in value over time if you transport them overseas and then store them in a vault for a few years. Unless you sell them to a wealthy watch collector, however, you will lose money by paying the seller's premium at auction. Of course, if you hold them for a few years, appreciation may very well cover the seller's premium.

The key is knowledge and a willingness to think outside the box.

I have bought and sold 4-figure watches for a profit, but do not recommend it. Good luck selling diamonds.
Have You Ever Tried to Sell a Diamond?

It is completely legal to carry any amount of cash in the U.S., or for that matter, outside the U.S. The only issue here seems to be reporting transactions or international transport over $10K. If you withdraw $300K in one single cash transaction, then it is pretty obvious where the money went. I don't know whether that is a problem. If you develop a gambling, watch, or car hobby and spend it over six months, then you can plausibly claim to be broke.

You could also send it to an offshore sportsbook or poker site.

Could you elaborate? I have always wanted to buy and sell watches to work my way up to something. More for the challenge than the actual watch. I get there are a lot of fakes and stolen ones in order to get enough of a spread to make it worth your time. Slight tangent, but curious!

1000's of people disappear every day in the US. There are millions of undocumented immigrants here right now.

This international man of mystery is kinda white collar of you ask me.

Getting the papers might be the hardest part.

It seems like plenty of people have been able to do it, just need to find out the right situation. Not trying to be an asshole, but it just comes down to intention/commitment. There is definitely no ABC plan to what you are asking.

If you land in a new country and meet the right person who helps you out, of course. But I wouldn't feel comfortable telling anyone that for sure could happen.

Anyone who is on this board and has done it would be wise not to say they are currently doing it, so that information would be hard to find.

You learn to spot fake watches, Frankenstein watches, and scam sellers quite easily after while. That is not the problem.

Unless you can repair watches yourself, your profit gets eaten up by repairs and replacement parts (if you can even find them).

It starts as a hobby and eventually becomes a burden.

I think it is just a matter of how badly someone wants to find you.

That is the point that most people keep missing in this thread. If the OP gets caught he goes to jail and loses his life savings. That is no joke.

If you wire cash, it will be traced. If you cross an international border with cash, you must report it (to both countries) or it will be confiscated. Do you really think that reporting $300k will not lead to extensive questioning and a background check for warrants? Moving large sums of cash that way might flight in Asia, but not in the U.S.

So you wear two $150,000 watches or transport diamonds and you then lose twenty or thirty percent at auction or by selling to a wholesaler. That is the cost of not losing everything -- both your freedom and your life savings. People are not keeping things in proper perspective in this discussion.

My advice would be completely different if the OP were simply dodging creditors or ex-wives. Running from the USG is not joke. I would urge him not to do it.
