Former model Jilly Johnson, 60, lives in Hertfordshire with her husband Ashley. She says:
Jilly Johnson: I was 42

Quote:I’ll never forget it. I was crossing the road to enter Selfridges department store in London when I caught a glimpse of a tubby woman reflected in the shop’s huge windows. When her strides started to mirror mine, it hit me: she was me.

I was completely taken aback, and as people rushed past me, I stood stock-still in the middle of the road staring at my reflection. I didn’t look willowy and light, as I’d always been. On that day, aged 42, I looked dumpy and middle-aged.

Journalist and author Helena Frith Powell, 48, lives in France and Abu Dhabi. She says: I was 38

Quote:It was ten years ago, almost to the day. I was 38 and driving into our local village in France when I caught sight of myself in my rear view mirror. There was a criss-cross of wrinkles across my forehead and around my eyes.

GMTV presenter Kate Garraway, 46, lives in London with her husband and two children. She says:

In that moment, I realised that however much I try to halt the ageing process with creams and potions, diet and exercise regimes, it will defy me and happen anyway. It’s happening now. And there’s nothing I can do about it.


But being happily married and having children has taken away a lot of the insecurities women have when they’re young, when we endlessly analyse our looks, worrying about every split end in our hair, because we want the people we fancy to fancy us back.

If it means being settled and content, getting older can be a relief.

Writer Claudia Connell is 47 and lives in London. She says:

Quote:I was 34 and it was shortly after that I began to notice other signs of ageing: the fine lines around my eyes, the vertical lines on my décolletage and how I could no longer keep pace with the younger women at my aerobics classes.

Throughout my teens and 20s, I had always looked years younger than I was. But, as I hit my mid-30s, all that stopped. Mother Nature took the brakes off and, seemingly overnight, I turned from bright-eyed, dewy-skinned nymph into red-eyed, flaky-skinned hag.

It was also in my mid 30s that I realised I could no longer go braless. I used to like not wearing one under strapless tops, but things were starting to sag and my once-perky boobs looked like a couple of balloons — a week after the party.

Makes me feel bad for these women. It's terrible for them when they realize they've lost the one thing they most care about.

Women are physical creatures; their body is all they have. When they admit to this and confess to their true feelings, I don't have that much of a problem with them and can feel plenty of sympathy.

If these ladies hadn't become adapted to receiving reams of attention and favours on account of their looks, it wouldn't be much of a heartbreak to suddenly be unable to fake youth.

Men often have similar mid-life crises when they reach forty or so and suddenly realize that years of backbreaking work has earned them a wife that causes erectile dysfunction, children who more or less expect that their needs be met and an existence which isn't going to be improved upon.

All the more reason not to follow society's rules for us. Delay marriage, while enjoying college sluts, build your career, investments and identity. Then lock down a nubile 20 yr old half your age at the same age most guys are starting to regret ever bothering to get out of bed.

I agree. When women are honest like this, I feel for them.

It's true that, for 95 percent of women, her looks and sexuality will always be her foremost agency. But when that fades, if she's made good and far-sighted decisions--like finding a good man to marry and have children--then she won't have to fear growing old.

We don’t teach women to cultivate the power of feminine dignity, because we’ve decided to attempt to give them lifelong sexual power by celebrating cougardom and botox addiction. We don’t teach women the value of family, because we celebrate women who are too “independent” for children while at the same time encouraging single motherhood and consequently, the notion that men & fathers are disposable. This society has gone out of its way to shield women from the long-term consequences of their poor decisionmaking, but nature isn't playing along.

You don’t keep your physical beauty forever…but if you leverage it with good decisionmaking while you are young then you will be able to transition between modes of being when the time is right.

This is the lesson of our grandmothers. My grandmother was an absolutely stunning woman. But after her looks & sexual power had faded, she was able to transition seamlessly into a woman of dignity and honor because she had made sure to find a good man while she was a knockout, and because she had spent her younger years cultivating the tools she would need long after she was no longer able to cause traffic accidents by just getting up in the morning. The truly miserable women aren't the aging mothers with husbands and children like in this piece. These women are models of feminine dignity and grace---true matrons and matriarchs worthy of respect. No, the really miserable ones are the aging hags slaving away in the various HR departments and cubicle farms of this country with nothing to go home to. These are the women still desperately clinging to what's left of their sexual power, because after it's gone there is nothing for them.

If you make good choices, if you cultivate your personality and learn to value the love of a good man, if you can learn to take your triumphs, defeats, and uncertainies with dignity then you will be less heavily invested in the fleeting sexual power of your youth and able to transition into some more lasting & worthy when the time comes.

And, as the women in this piece are finding out, that time is around age 35 for most women---whether they like it or not.

People who know me, know I am pretty compassionate and caring, probably too much.

But this is the deal with mother nature. They get to have a great time in their youth. Where all they have to do up and not be fat and they can get attention, even gifts from beta orbiters. Hopefully, they were like squirrels and stored reserves for the long winter of the twilight of their lives. From the sounds of it, probably not.

Yes, but there is a great difference. The crisis that happens in a man's life is a spiritual one. For that reason it is of course far more important and consequential, but it's also true that for that reason its resolution is up in the air. A man can be defeated or he can prevail.

With women it's much simpler because they're simpler creatures. One day they look in the mirror and they know that the deepest part of their essence, the main thing that makes them the creatures they are, is gone. It's not really a matter of struggle; it's just a dreadful realization.

Women are made for the world and for day to day life, so they'll soldier on and go on about their business, and if their lives have gone correctly they'll have children and grandchildren to satisfy the other part of their feminine essence. But there is a real pathos to the moment when they realize the irreversible loss of their sexual prime.

@samsamsam, of course it's not any kind of tragedy and is entirely natural. There is just that moment of pathos that can be recognized and acknowledged. But it's not anything a man needs to dwell on at any length.

Maybe this is just me but I don't really see that comment as particularly hamsteriffic on its face. In fact that seems like the attitude women should have. Relief is the silver lining that comes with acceptance of reality and sexual marginalization-- especially after having successfully raised a family.

Though who knows if she truly believes what she wrote, Kate Garraway still looks bangable to me even at 46 and probably invests a great deal of time, money, and energy into her appearance.
