I thought that this was going to be a story about a man who killed a boar with his bare hands or some make shift weapon.

After opening this page, I discovered that he used a gun like a pussy. Poor boar never had a chance.

Hogzilla was almost 800 lbs. Hybrid wild boar/domestic pig.

One theory on its size was that it was getting into the high protein fish food at local fish farms.

I saw that documentary. Pigs are the hardest animal to domesticate and the easiest to go wild once escaping captivity. Within days their hair color changes and tusks start to grow. Crazy.

Feeds his family. Living off the land. Kill or be killed. I agree with you two though. I don't believe in hunting for sport. Only for survival. I just think it amazing their is a beast that big roaming around the woods of North Carolina.

Once feral, they also go back to being omnivores and will feed on snakes and rodents as well as plants.

They are especially a nuisance in Texas from what I hear.

A 500 lbs. boar got plenty of chance! Boars that big have extra thick bones and gristle plates that grow so dense, they've been known to prevent penetration of typical high velocity hunting rounds like 30-6 and .270.

I shot a mere 100 lbs. boar at near point blank range right in the shoulder (should normally be a kill shot) with my .357 revolver, and that sucker ran off. My dogs tracked it downriver and finally caught it and I was able to finish it off with my knife.

When I de-boned the carcass, I found the .357 round buried in the shoulder gristle plate. For some reason, that particular pig grew an extra thick "puna" that was essentially a bullet proof plate!

Anyhow, I've killed plenty of wild pigs with my knife, and I've shot my fair share as well (been boar hunting for 20 years), and I would never call using a gun to successfully bag some game "pussy."

I've seen guys with guns freeze up the first time they had a chance to shoot a pig (boar fever!).

Matter of fact, the first time I bought my 30-30 lever action brush gun and went hunting when I was 21 years old, that's exactly what happened to me! I couldn't believe my first solo hunt with my brand new gun and I had come across a big boar only an hour's hike in the forest. I cocked and loaded and aimed....then froze. I was too afraid to make a bad shot and blow my chances at catching the biggest boar I had ever seen hunting without dogs. The pig was partially obscured by brush and I couldn't get a clear target for his shoulder or his head.

I slightly lowered my gun and tired to reposition myself to have a better angle on his shoulder, and managed to step on a small branch and made a noise that made the boar startle and bolted off. To this day, I kick myself for that lost opportunity.

Shooting big game is not as easy as you might think...let alone a 500 lbs. behemoth like that.

Those are products of the act, yes, but I don't think killing it is much an accomplishment--especially with what appears to be a military-grade piece of machinery. That would be like a headline that said, "Man Gets His Direct Deposit for the Week of 3/14/14" and people patting him on his back because he can feed his family now.

My last post notwithstanding, this is largely true. The true challenge to boar hunting is getting the dead beast home after you kill it.

Wonder how the dude managed to get that large a hog back for butchering?

Boars (most of which are actually domestic pigs that got loose and went feral after a few generations back in the wild) are very aggressive, highly intelligent, and don't have a lot of fear of humans. The majority of animals you encounter in the wild in the US would prefer to not have anything to do with humans. While wild pigs may try to avoid human contact, they'll attack if push comes to shove. Nursing females are probably more dangerous than the males. If one attacks, and you don't have the means to stop it, it will most likely kill you.

With that said, I don't consider hunting to be much of a sport, and I would be impressed had the guy hunted on the ground where he actually put himself at risk. At least he plans to eat the thing. It's a lot better than that cunt who outraged the internet a few months ago by killing the lion in the canned hunt in South Africa.

That's why I'm saying the focus should be on the boar existing, not the idiot who killed it with a machine gun. If he'd done it with a bow and arrow or some throwing knives, then he could get some props too.

I knew about a guy who had never fired a gun who bought a rifle, took three test shots to zero the scope, and then went hunting and fired the fourth and last shot of his life, successfully bagging a deer.

Nobody wrote a newspaper article about him.
