I am special, I am special
While riding my bicycle today, in Lima Peru, I was fortunate enough to overhear a peppy middle aged woman teaching some very young kids a song. The words were" I am special, I am special." This disturbed me greatly for 2 reasons.

1. Being squeezed out of a vagina doesn't make something special. This has occurred billions of times. These kids couldn't have been more than 2 or 3 years old. I doubt they are special. They are probably quite ordinary, and could very well become sucky people.

2. I think that telling kids that they are special is a bad message, and uniquely American. In other countries they would sing, "I am ordinary, I am not special." I think that is a better message.

Everyday Americans are becoming less and less special. Our health and education is worse than similar countries. Our bodies and minds are not as special as others, yet we repeatedly tell ourselves that we are. Maybe we should start singing different songs that are less detrimental to personal and societal development.

RE: I am special, I am special
Are you sure the kids weren't a little older and it was a special needs class outing?
