I can't believe New Delhi, India has a higher ranking than Toronto.
I remember hiring a autorickshaw to take 10 km from a mall to my house in Delhi. The guy wanted 2.5 dollars for it. My family thought the guy swindled me for twice as much as he deserved.

The cab in Toronto would have cost 10-15 times as much as that easily. Public transport would cost 3 dollars here.

Delhi is expensive in terms of housing. For 2 million dollars you could get a mansion in Canada but in Delhi you will end up with a not so lavish house. It won't be too big and the its best feature would be a swimming pool in the basement. And things get worse in Mumbai.

that list is way off. i've spent time in some of those countries and they're not even close to being as expensive as other cities i've lived in that are ranked lower

I will admit, the housing costs in Delhi are insane. Hell, its a bubble as far as I'm concerned from the prices I saw.

Public transport is not a good barometer of how much a place costs. I think it actually has more to do with income disparity (cheap public transport = lots of poor people).

However, the real question is how much does a Western standard of living cost in different countries?

This includes a reasonably nice apartment in a safe neighborhood, protein rich meals, Internet/cell, imported products including cars.

For us in the West, the greatest expense is housing. For most people in the world the greatest expense is food.
