Can you guys recommend an international health insurance for travelers?

How much do you pay per month or year?

I just got a quote from Allianz Worldwide Care for 1800 Euros per year.

I think it is too expensive. Do you know better deals with serious companies?

I used Gouda Super from kilroy travels during my world trip. It was 1100€ for 12 months, rather expensive but that insurance would cover nearly everything. Even traveling to war zones like Somalia,Pakistan and Iraq. But ironically the only country it didn't cover was the USA. Don't know the reason, maybe the US doctors tend to send too juicy bills to pay.

Another reason why I chose gouda super was because it got really good references and it seem to be no bullshit about. Later on the road I found out cheaper alternatives but I don't how reliable they are.

Gouda super is a safe bet.

Oh, my apologies Lika! I found the English verison but now I read it's only for people from the Nordic countries.

I pay ~$50 a month for 100% coverage up to $1million. Granted I've never had to use it, but it's a reputable company. If you're from the USA it should still be available to you. PM me for details.

I use World Nomads.

Cost depends on what your home country is and what region you are going to. If you have a European passport going to Europe, it's about $50/month. [For basic coverage, think it's more if you're doing adventure sports and the like].

Never made a claim but definitely want the peace of mind of medical expenses if need be, those can be staggeringly expensive even for something relatively minor.

I know this is stupid but I stopped getting insurance for traveling abroad. Most of the places I go are developing countries so I would just pay out of pocket at the best hospital in the country which usually caters to the rich and expats so it is decent quality.

Healthcare costs abroad are nothing like America. Even hospitalization would run into the low thousands not hundreds of thousands like the US. As I get older though maybe I should start buying insurance.

I usually use Merkur Versicherung AG (Austria)'s basic health insurance, which has always given me reasonable rates so far. I think I paid something like 75$ for a two-month stay in a developed western country. Extrapolating from that (you can only get bulk discounts if you buy a whole year ahead, no way it will get proportionally more expensive), one year with them would be around 800$, which is still a great rate.
