I've just bought a Remington 700 chambered in .30-06 with a 24 inch barrel and am trying to figure out what optics to get for it. I don't have any specific plans as to what I'm gonna use the rifle for, I got it because I think guns are awesome and the concept of being able to kill shit from a kilometer away is hella cool. I don't want anything too crappy but I also would prefer to stay under $500 if possible. Any recommendations for a scope that's <$500, has MOA markings in the crosshairs, adjustments for at least 1000 yards and 10+ magnification? Or is that unrealistic at that price point for new glass?

Thats a serious rifle you have there! I'm pretty jealous.

I'm not so experienced with using sights for shooting further than 600 meters. So I can't help you there.
I used some Huskemaw sights once which were fucking cool but I think they are really expensive.

I was just going to point out that you might have some trouble hitting your target at more than 1000 yards with a .30-06 round.
I don't know the exact data / trajectory myself. But I can tell you at that distance, with that round, you are going to be aiming around 10 meters above the target.
Also the velocity of the round would have dropped down to about a third of what it would be in the first 100 meters. Which means you are going to have to think about wind a lot more.

It would be worth steering away from cheap ammunition.

Use a solid mount, no aluminum all steel. Nikon scopes are about the best bang for your buck these days. I would suggest that you find a apple seed shoot to go to as you will learn much about basic marksmanship. Also congrats on buying a traditional mans rifle.

What's your budget?

I have a Leupold VX-3 in 1.75 - 6x on my Browning .308 rifle. I think I got it on sale for around $400.

Don't get caught up in thinking that you need high magnification. For your rifle, a 3 - 9x would be a great scope. Unless you're on a bench or shooting prone, you can't hold a rifle steady enough to use anything more than 9x.

I would say that 90% or more of shots taken while hunting will be under 200 yards.

I do not think that the price point is unrealistic. I think that your goals are a bit unrealistic. Adjustments for at least 1000 yards? Very few people have a 1000 capability without years of knowledge and practice.

My father was a great shot back in the day. He routinely killed woodchucks up to 500 and 600 yards. He hand loaded his own ammo and glass-bedded his own rifles. Are you doing that?

Very few people use 10-power-plus magnification. Remember that you sacrifice field-of-vision for power. That is a mistake that many new hunters make. They lose the ability to quickly find their target with a high-power scope. My father always used a 1.5 to 4 power scope and he bagged several deer every year.

You can pick up a decent 3-9 power scope for less than $100. If shooting becomes a real sport for you, you can always invest more money later. If you really want that type of accuracy, you will need to invest in hand loading equipment well before you need a $500 scope.

Have fun. Shooting is a great sport. It teaches patience and discipline.

I agree. And if you live in brush country, 90% or more of shots taken while hunting deer will be under 100 yards.

The .308 is my father's favorite cartridge for deer hunting. It really puts them down!

If you really want to push the limits, go varmint hunting. Small animals at long ranges. That is where a 30-06 will shine. A 25-06 or .2250 is even better.

Looks like it is a fixed 10x. What do you plan to use the rifle for?

Sorry, wrong scope. I've been looking at the Bushnell Mil Dot scopes. They're an alternative to the Leupold, and Night Force I was just using.
