20 injured in knife attack at Western PA highschool
Wtf.
Quote:(CNN) -- A male sophomore went on a stabbing spree at his Pittsburgh-area high school early Wednesday, an emergency management agency spokesman said.
At least 20 students at Franklin Regional Senior High School were injured, and the alleged attacker is in custody, said Dan Stevens, a spokesman for Westmoreland County Emergency Management.
The violence, Stevens said, happened in classrooms and a hallway. Four people were flown to hospitals by helicopter, he said.
Seven teens and one adult were being treated at nearby Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, according to Dr. Chris Kaufmann. Their injuries are "quite serious," and "some are clearly life threatening," he said.
Victims were stabbed in their torso, abdomen, chest and back areas, and two people were sent to surgery immediately after arriving, he said. Those two patients had low blood pressure, he said. A third was being prepared for surgery Wednesday morning, and the rest were being evaluated to see whether surgery was necessary, he said.

Eleven victims were taken to four University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospitals, UPMC spokesman Cindy McGrath said. One was sent to UPMC Presbyterian; four were taken to Children's Hospital; one was taken to UPMC Mercy; and five were taken to UPMC East. She did not have ages or conditions of the victims.
The students who were hurt range in age from 14 to 17, Stevens said. All of the injures are stabbing-related, such as lacerations or punctures, and there were no guns involved he, said.
A message on the Franklin Regional School District's website said all of its elementary schools were closed after the incident, and "the middle school and high school students are secure."
The school is in Murrysville, about 15 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh. Information on what led to the stabbings and the conditions of the injured are still unfolding.
Later Wednesday morning, students were being released to their parents, Stevens said. Shortly before 10 a.m. ET, CNN affiliate KDKA reported that some parents were beginning to be reunited with their children.
Bill Rehkopf, a KDKA radio host and Franklin Regional High School graduate, reported on air that he was shocked by the stabbings.
He kept thinking, "It doesn't happen here, it can't happen here," he said.
He said he was seeing parents showing up at the school and an increasing media presence. Parents appear to be calm, he said. Another KDKA reporter said she spoke with a parent who said she received a cell phone call from her daughter, who told her mother that "something bad" happened and that she needed to be picked up.
I wonder what the case will be this time.
Stabbing 20 people in that quick of succession sounds difficult. Also paints an extremely harrowing picture in my mind.

That's crazy. Stabbing is very different from opening fire with a machine gun.
Nobody tried to stop him earlier?

One of the guards was stabbed in the stomach.
Apparently the kid is a 16 year old.
A question for those with experience with both guns and knives, especially those who have used them in combat. To me, it seems like it would take additional aggression to use a knife instead of a gun. A gun is generally from distance, to me it is less personal. To take a knife and put that much energy into it indicates some sort of rage or excessive energy to do that, very primal I imagine. I don't think I am explaining it very well, but it seems like to go on a knife rampage seems to require an additional layer of craziness, especially considering how easy guns are to get.
They did catch him. Which makes sense I imagine a person with a knife may be easier to subdue, I said may, I have never had to subdue anyone. So I am curious what madness is in this kid's knife.

The army spends a good amount of time teaching recruits close quarters combat for a reason.
If someone is within 2-3 feet of you, recruits are instructed to not even bother pulling out their gun. Instead, they should get getting their knife ready. This is because an aggressor can easily point the nozzle of the gun away from them, or, even worse, they can simply take the gun outright. Trying to shoot someone with a gun in CQC is dangerous and risky.
However, a very sharp knife cannot be taken from you, and combat knives are sharp enough to cut through bone. You don't need to reload them, and usually a knife wound is worse than a bullet wound. Not only is the knife wound bigger and deeper but the blade can injure multiple organs at once. Also, knives cannot be stopped by Kevlar.
Thus, knives are more dangerous than guns in the right situation. And by banning guns, you create the optimal situation for CQC weaponry.
Ironic when you ban guns, you just make people more vulnerable to other weapons that are just as dangerous as guns. The only solution is to give more guns to more people so they can defend themselves. Liberals are way too detached from reality, however, so I expect more bloodshed in the future.

80% of the teachers at a school are women. They wouldn't be able to take down a teenage boy, as even a teenage boy is much stronger than a fully developed woman.
