Books dealing with the subject of being and/or becoming a man, and "the nature of man". That should cast a somewhat wide net.

For instance, Bukowski definitely fits this bill, but then so does Kvothe in Name of the Wind. The latter book chronicles the life of Kvothe from early childhood to adulthood:

"I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep."

I am currently reading "Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman?" by Richard Feynman, which also fits my criteria.

It was also this quote below that made me think of starting this thread.
