It is not always well published that some airlines include accommodation, meals and hotel transfers (and sometimes a visa) in the ticket price when you have a long involuntary wait for a connecting flight. The flight doesn't have to be delayed, it's just that the next outbound flight that the airline has scheduled would incur a long wait.

Far from all airlines offer this and I thought that it would be good to point out the ones that do.

A return ticket traveling through Dubai on both legs needs to cost at least the equivalent of USD1200

From experience airlines that do not: Ryanair and Canadian Airlines. They provide a couch/row of seats.
Which someone just has to vacuum beside every two hours while you sleep so its definetly clean.

I rather sleep next to a vacuum cleaner than having Ryanair's extensive and loud passenger announcements on board. Or just try to book another airline.

True, my flight got delayed on my way to Shanghai out of Tokyo, and because it was a conection flight, I got a free 5 Star hotel, meals and transportation!

Experienced a delay in Dusseldorf one night with my new flight leaving next day to Frankfurt. Because of the inconvenience, Lufthansa provided me with free cab rides to and from a four star hotel with free dinner/breakfast too. The cab ride on way from/back to the airport was arranged with a pre-arranged calling service too.

Hahah. Well, that long of a layover might give one the opportunity to get out in the streets and spit some daygame (or nightgame depending on the time).

Fly Direct when possible!!

Seoul to London is 10 hours 50 mins if you go direct, and a minimum of like 17 hours but usually over 24 hours if you stop off!!

Having said that, the quality of the airport matters a lot here

Incheon airport is amazing for stop overs. Get a massage, take a shower, watch a movie, go to a sauna/spa plus lots of smoking rooms and lounges

There's a website called sleepinginairports.net or something similar, and has a guide to the best airports to sleep in

Yes, you may pay more. However, I've missed enough flights in my time and ended up spending more in lodging, food, etc than I would have if I just forked over the extra cash to fly direct. A short term loss for a long term gain.

exactly, usually direct flights are a couple hundred $$ more, but you don't have to wait around, buy food (think expensive airport food!) or even get a hotel (pay for taxi to said hotel, etc)

I don't mind having a stopover if it's in a nice place. One or two days once in a while in Dubai for example isn't too bad. It also helps for time adjustment with a one or two day stopover and if you can't fly direct anyway dividing the flight in two makes it less tiresome.

Depends on the layover time. If it's over 8 hours some airlines do it, but not on economy or discount or promotion fares, if it is over 20 hours most airlines do it. However, 20 hours just waiting around is a pain in the ass, unless you end up going out gaming, but due to the fact most airports are way out of the city, trains or taxis are expensive, plus gaming in a 20 hour slot is challenging without a room nearby ("fancy coming back to my place; the airport hotel??") or local knowledge

However, if it is a 2 day layover or more it becomes acceptable. I'd still rather fly direct though. It's worth the extra money.

Just as a quick response to this I have a 7hr 50 min layover in Doha and Qatar wont supply a hotel. I asked to at least have access to their airport lounges. No go.

Well, 7:50 < 8:00.

I love Qatar Airways. Missed a flight due to something that was not their fault and they charged me one dollar to re-book it (and let me sit down at a PC in their airport office to book a third-party connecting flight). The new flight had a long layover in Qatar and I got a free Qatar visa, driven for free to a luxury hotel, and free buffet meal. Plus they only hire hot stewardesses.

Qatar Airways rocks. Gotta love oil money.
