I should mention that I cannot stand American women. I try to avoid them at all costs. There are women from all over the world in NYC, but quite a few American women migrants from all over the US; that have settled in NYC. My friend calls these American women from the Midwest residing in NYC, "refugees".

Reading this forum, Australian women seem to more or less the same.

I only recently visited Melbourne over the past weekend. Even though I'm Australian I've spent more time in NYC.

Personally I can't stand Manhattan. It almost like instant depression [To me anyway]. Consumerism at it's highest. It feels superficial & forced.

There's people here who can give more data on Melbourne but 100% without question I can guarantee it will be more relaxed [Which is a big factor for me personally].

Reason for picking two universities that are on opposite sides of the world, and narrowing down to just two choices?

I think that you'll be happier and healthier in Melbourne. Rush87 is right, Manhattan is a bit of a hole, very materialistic and blase.

Melbourne is smaller and more laid back, which is why I say that you'll probably be happier. But there are more opportunities (career mostly) in NYC.

NYC - higher quality Anglo girls, higher quality and greater range of girls from Eastern Europe, Caribbean and South America.

NYC - Higher quality education and better alumni network you will develop.

NYC - Higher quality opportunities for conferences, internships and graduate work, also higher opportunity for meeting top of the field academics and world leading start ups.

NYC - Higher quality night life.

NYC - Likely to offer more in terms of entertainment, professional development, game development, well development in all areas really.


Melbourne - more 'relaxed', better coffee... well I'm out of advantages.

Cost wise you'll probably be equal, Australian universities are not cheap, except for real estate I'd imagine all things equal each dollar in Melbourne will buy you a bit more space and higher quality accommodation than in NYC.

Melbourne is nice but it's you're comparing it against the worlds #1 'alpha' city.


Are you doing this degree to get ahead or to be happy and healthy? As far as escaping consumerism, well good luck in Melbourne.

NYC is actually cheaper than Melbourne outside of real estate, and even then it's still cheaper than Melbourne in the suburbs.

I went to Columbia as an undergrad. If you are pursuing a second BA and older (>18-22), only School of General Studies comes into question, and they don't have scholarships for such "secondary studies". Any particular reason to justify the exorbitant fees (easily $50K+/year with tuition and living expenses)?

Also PU/social-wise, you'll be lonely in the middle. Nearly all normal undergrads (i.e. 18-22) live in on-campus dormitories and the social life is heavily dorm-based. You'll have to crack that scene from outside. On the other hand, you are not in one of the graduate programs (which have a coherent community) either...

NYC is not for everyone. It's fine to visit for a few days or even weeks. But to live there for years, you'll need some convincing reasons -- enough return on investment.

I went to The University of Melbourne as an undergrad. While Columbia is ranked higher globally (more Nobel Prize winners than any other uni) Melbourne is top ranked in Australia and features top 15-20 for most disciplines including law, social sciences and a few others. I have many friends who are went on to study at Oxford, who work at big 4 accounting firms, big 3 law firms, the top oil / resource companies and premier govt departments like DFAT, PMC and Treasury.

If I was American I wouldn't study at Melbourne for the prestige value as it doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves, nor for cost of living, nor to pick up chicks. Yes it's different from US but the price to pay doesn't justify the experience.

I'm from Melbourne but I'd pick NYC. Melbourne uni is great but if you are career-minded you can't beat a degree from Columbia.

It depends on a lot of factors.

- Although U.Melb. is currently ranked as the top university in Australia, when considering global rankings, Columbia is still higher. I would also say that Columbia is much more widely known globally by employers compared to U.Melb.

- Melbourne has a lot of hot girls, but my guess would be that NYC would still have the superior talent. Whether or not that talent is accessible to you is an entirely different question. In Melbourne, the alternative music/hipster/indie scene is enormous, and guys who play in bands and/or have strong connections in this scene tend to do best.

- If you're from North America, studying in Australia could be a very interesting experience in comparison to NYC.

- Regarding cost of living, basic goods such as food, believe it or not, would probably be more expensive in Melbourne than in NYC. Regarding rent, it will really depend on the area.

I would question the whole point of doing a second bachelors degree, never mind where. The decision also depends on where you want to work. You want to be in the US? Go to an American university. To the extent this endeavour makes any sense, the whole point is to get the most elite credentials possible, NOT for a good education. Columbia University is an Ivy League name brand. Univ of Melbourne is nothing in the name recognition game (although it may be a fine school academically).

Also, with respect to American women, you don't have to date American women if you live in America! That's what makes it such a great country! Hell, if I can avoid dating and banging American women in DC, then in NYC it is a cakewalk.
