I am driving across the country, for the third time now actually. I very much would like to take the northern route, but that is out of the question. I've been on the I10 and I70 previously. I'm thinking of going through Vegas and onto Alabama (there's a CMP store there, going to pick up another Garand) but I'm open as to what's in between. Any suggestions? Any sites I should visit? Much obliged.

Not sure how much of a detour it is, but I'd say The Grand Canyon or Zion national park in Utah.

I will be doing something similar in a month as I will be moving back to the East Coast from LA.

Maybe you can help with my itinerary?

What I have set in stone now is;

Thursday - arrive in Scottsdale and stay at the W

Friday - Either El Paso or Lubbock, TX. Im leaning towards Lubbock because its a college town, and I can make my way through the canyons in AZ and drive through New Mexico. Both are cheap, but it sounds like El Paso is a dump, with nothing going on. It would save some time, but Id rather see cool stuff, and be in a college town.

Saturday/Sunday - I will be staying in Houston. Any recommendations what part to stay in? I am going to a Texans game Sunday. I thought about Austin for Saturday, maybe someone can twist my arm, and convince if its worth it.

For the last 24 hours of the trip, Im not sure where to stop. I know I can stop in ATL, Nashville, Chattanooga, anywhere along the way. Ill likely make two stops before I arrive in Philadelphia. Any recommendations would help. I would like to drive through the Shenandoah Valley, as I hear its beautiful, but hopefully there aren't poor conditions.

I did this trip a few years ago only went east to west. Vegas is worth checking out for a day or two. If you haven't seen the Grand Canyon yet I would check that out. I would highly recommend White Sands, NM. One of the coolest, most scenic places I have ever been. After that things start to get barren. Dallas and Austin are worth a few days each if you haven't been yet. I stopped in Tuscaloosa, AL because 1) it was a college town so I figured there would be something to do for a night and 2) it was right after the tornado and I wanted to check out the damage first hand. Going the southern route allows you to check out some cool Southern towns. I spent 3 days in Charleston, SC and loved it. I've heard Savannah, GA is neat as well. You can shoot up from Charleston to DC in about 8 hours.
