I thought they weren't so bad (didn't know anything on them actually), but they seem to be a disaster for health. I took a strong 1g single dose of Azithromycin a week ago and since read a lot of stuff about them. I'm worried it killed lots of good healthy bacteria and how to repair it among many other things too. Also, when someone gets chlamydia how the hell would they treat it without antibiotics? It seems like a disaster to take antibiotics but also 'needed' when getting certain types of infections (or is it?) Many reports say do not take antibiotics as your system doesn't learn to fight it by itself. People even die from antibiotics. Ideas welcome.

Who says it is a disaster? Dying from untreated disease is much worse.

I agree that we over prescribe for a lot of things, this is particularly the case in Asia and the US. I had a really bad stomach infection in Thailand, would vomit viciously if I took even a sip of water. I had insurance and the hospital admitted me (in a very expensive room) and gave me antibiotics. Yet, at the time I actually got them and they began working, I was already over the worst part as I felt i. I doubt it would have killed me, despite that I was actually dangerously dehydrated.

Anyway, it seems clamydia and gonorhea goes away on its own with men, rather quickly. I think you could get some kind of testicular infection though, which could leave you infertile. Here is a quote I found from a doctor:

Precise data are not available; obviously it would be unethical to intentionally delay treatment to see how quickly treatable infections would clear up in their own. Of course, for syphilis in the past there was no good treatment.

When I'm ill and doctors prescribe something or want to do some treatment, I like to ask for fun, what would have been done 500 years ago. It's interesting because many times, these things we think are so major, are not really deadly if you're young and healthy. Even injuries and such can heal well on their own.

Just Google what you are getting prescribed, some anti-biotics are much more dangerous than others, but overall there isn't much danger. Take a pro-biotic.

I took Azithromycin for two years. Three days on, Three days off. The doctor gave it to me for acne (?).

Thinking back, I used to wonder why the hell I was never sick, until I realized I was putting antibiotics into my body almost daily.

I'm pretty sure it did jack shit for my acne but never getting sick was pretty awesome. That was three years ago and I've never had any complications.

@bezerk that's what I tough too. It is a bacteria infection and if the body is allowed to heal it I figure it will build immunity too. Taking antibiotics for . it might have caused me to only get weaker and hurt my immune system. When reading about it on Doctor forums all doctors would say you need antibiotics. What is wrong with these fools if they know It can be cured by body without issue? Stuff I read on it made me feel that of I don't get treatment my balls will fall off and I wouldn't be able to have a ex and I'd have infection for life that will only get worse.

When you take antibiotics it is important to replenish your good bacteria with prbiotics and probiotics. Prebiotics are essentiall food to help probiotic thrive and actually have potency and benefit in your digestive tract. If you do not replenish your good flora then you could be at risk for candida overgrowth which leads to lethargy, skin issues, memory loss, digestive issues and a host of others.

Antibiotics are only bad if you do not compensate for the good things that they also destroy along with the bad.

I view antibiotics as the nuclear power of modern medicine. When used in a controlled, strictly targeted fashion, they are amazing and one of the most wondrous things about the modern age. Millions of people used to suffer chronic diseases and die from common and benign infections before the discovery of major antibiotics.

However, overuse is a serious problem nowadays. Doctors (at least here, there can certainly be crazy ones like Laurifer's) are usually on top of it and won't prescribe them unless necessary (for example if they can't be sure it's an illness caused by bacteria and not viruses, or if it's a mild infection); usually it's the patients who demand to be given antibiotics, thinking that these are some universal miracle drugs that solve everything. And this is not to mention rampant overuse in the livestock industry, where animals kept in abysmal conditions are fed antibiotics as a preventive measure.

If we keep overusing them, a day will come when a bloodthirsty mutated Godzilla rises out of the sea and destroys us.

I hate the Azithromycin 1g, the side effect profile is terrible. The stuff is also long lasting, it takes days to work out of your system, so if you have a reaction to it, you have to wait days for the reaction to stop.

There are plenty of cheaper and more comfortable antibiotics to prescribe. The 1g single dose is a damn marketing gimmick and I don't like it.

Most bacterial infections will resolve by themselves even without antibiotics, but you will feel miserable until it goes away (which can take months - can you imagine feeling ill for months?) and you run the risk of body-wide infection (septicemia) every day you have the infection. Antibiotics therefore do have their place.

One hidden benefit of overprescription of antibiotics is that no new bacterial epidemic has emerged since the introduction of antibiotics. The only new epidemics that pop up are all viral. It seems that we are nuking potential bacterial plagues before they can even exist.

That said, I don't prescribe antibiotics unless I suspect a bacterial infection.

Don't bash antibiotics too much for messing up one's gut flora - I suspect that refined foods, which are heaped with 'preservatives' (which is just another name for an 'antibiotic' that can be added to food) are causing much more havoc in western style diets.

But yes, do increase your intake of fermented foods if your gut feels off due to antibiotics.

I took them from about 19 to 21. I don't remember how many milligrams I was taking, they were the oval shaped red ones with 93 on it if that helps indicate anything.

The risk involved with antibiotics is so huge. For the majority of bacterial infection, even chlamydia, studies show it clears up on its own. Then you build a natural immunity. Why isn't that talked about!!! Because the pharmaceutical companies are corrupt bastards and there's no money in it. I'm heated there are so many studies out there proving this stuff but it's all hidden to modern public via so much propaganda and (education) which is really indoctrination in disguise. They mislead the public. I'm extremely mad (and that's extremely rare for me) that I took antibiotics knowing what I now do. I'm trying hard as hell to build up my gut bacteria now and detox and just get back in the Grove of health. A side benefit is I learned the importance of gut bacteria far more. Also cool things like cabbage juice in clinical studies totally cures stomach sores and restores lining to the stomach better than any conventional drug compared to it (because of the l glutamines in it).

I think try main thing is to do every thing you can to keep you immunity super strong, lifestyle is key, but gut health is a core of that... I'm learning a lot now regarding it

^ Take it easy there bro.

Even if anti-biotics is not strictly needed for clamydia, you avoid risking complications and those complications could eventually lead to infertility, probably rare, but still. Untreated bacterial infections also lower your immunity, so you are more at risk for other infections.

It is apparent that whilst antibiotics have been "a miracle of modern medicine", they are now being used far too liberally and there are massive downsides.
One article I read recently suggested to avoid them if possible, but if you really need them, insist on injections rather than pills as this will cause much less permanent damage to the gut.

Best advice on this thread. Take your probiotics if you're worried about not having enough "good" bacteria in your gut. Another option is eating yogurt with live cultures in them.

Hey guys, I should mention I am a doctor, so I obviously have my own biases. With that said, antibiotics most certainly do have side effects (as does any medication, even "natural" ones). Additionally, antibiotics are definitely overprescribed, I will agree with that, but saying to avoid them at all cost is just foolish. Not only can they help treat infections, they can help avoid certain complications of infections. They can do phenomenal things in the right situations.

Ilostcount, I'd love to read these studies you are mentioning. Maybe you can post a link to them?

I'm with TTR. I'm making my own fermented pickles now. I don't know how much healthy bacterias they will have. The pills make claims like 3 billion of X. It would be great to know what and how much is in 5 day fermented Pickles For example
