RE: Guys at gym slamming weights near you
I think screaming and dropping weights comes from lack of culture and consideration for others! I've seen both noobs and pros doing it.

The funniest I've seen was a guy with turrets syndrome! This shit was unbelievably funny! Every time he would see a hot girl he'd spit profanities like pussy, slut, cock whore,bitch!!!...I would lose my shit working out next to him! Girls reactions were priceless!!! He indeed had a legit case of turrets and the university gym had to allow him working out as he was an employee there.

It's worth pointing out that there are plenty of legit reasons for dropping weights. It's not always desirable to lock out a movement, or go through the eccentric motion of setting a heavy weight back down. If my gym had bumpers and higher quality bars I'd drop weights quite a bit.

RE: Guys at gym slamming weights near you
My philosophy for loud lifters:

You do you, dude. If you want to grunt, do it.

Personally, I sometimes dance along to my music on the treadmill between sprints. I often yell "fuck!" if I miss a heavy 1RM attempt, or if I fail halfway through a set. I don't give a shit if what I do bothers anyone. Could not care less. I try to stay uninhibited and do whatever lets me maximize my productivity.

Likewise, what others do for themselves in the gym doesn't affect me. If I let it, then I'm just going to perform worse. I can't care that the guy down the line is screaming when I am holding a 200-something-pounds barbell above my ribcage.

Grunting and dropping the barbell doesn't faze me. But the other day some guy with spaghetti arms and earphones in did triceps pushdowns in the cable rack and dropped the rope from the bottom every set. It was about to drive me insane. I wanted to put his head in the cable rack and let go of the rope.

RE: Guys at gym slamming weights near you
In general I let our more percussive bloats of air with bit of vocal tone yelp (lol) towards the last few reps of a tough set. I'd much rather make noise and actually be busting ass dripping in sweat, than going through the motions like so many others who come all year and their body doesn't change.

I go low weight on squats because I have torn both meniscuses, so full range free bar squats I have to be careful with because the knees are literally bone-on-bone. I do my heavy weight on leg-press. Any time I'm leg pressing over 1000 lbs, which was regularly for almost a year, I let out some uncontrollable growls. I say screw everyone else, you sit down and leg-press 1100 lbs and lets hear how hush you are.. not happening.

Once a man is committed to a heavy lift, I don't care how loud he is or if he slams the weights as long as he's making progress and not hurting anyone or breaking equipment.

RE: Guys at gym slamming weights near you
Once on the universal machine the guy next to me on the upright row slammed down the weight stack just as I was bending over to adjust the weights on the pull I was using. So, my ear was only about two feet away. Something popped in my ear and it felt numb for several weeks. I gave him a really nasty look. He didn't notice, but his partner did and told him in Spanish not to slam the weights down. He looked at me and didn't apologize, but he stopped slamming the weights as hard.

It depends on the situation. If they are clearly putting on a show and giving off a douchebro attitude like they don't need to be considerate of others because they're awesome and own the place, it is annoying. If it is just something that happens naturally at that stage of their workout and they make some attempt to keep things under control, no problem.

If they are lifting heavy weights, i find it's normal! U gain more power by breathing out and making some noise!

I try to get my clients to make some kind of noise! Otherwise i don't count it as a workout!

Have u ever watched Olympic weightlifting??? Do they make no noise?

I won't lie to you... if someone i don't know in the gym is making a lot of noise, it's annoying!

You go from saying its normal to saying its annoying? Also, using "u" instead of "you" is generally considered text speech and frowned upon on the forum.

I don't mind slamming weights or grunting or what not, as long as it is in moderation and makes sense, like a guy yelling when busting at 1RM.

There was a dude at my gym, swole ass cat but he was the most annoying guy I've ever seen in a gym. He would walk around with constant loud ass protein belches (at least one in between every set). Screaming, and I mean legit screaming, for EVERY SINGLE REP he did. Sets of 10x, screaming every single number! Even for lighter weight warm up sets.

Man that guy annoyed the shit out of me. At one point I decided to fuck with him and would scream just as loud for all my sets. I'd scream whatever rep I was on or throw in some real random shit: like random words in different languages, math formulas (E = MC^2 argh!!!!!!), ice cream flavors, whatever. I'm surprised it's not on youtube somewhere.

It didn't work, he gave me the nod of approval, like "yeah see it works mothaaa fuckaaa".

I switched gyms.

God'll prolly have me on some real strict shit

Noisey assed gym goers annoy me too. I've seen guys of all sizes lift more than them in various gyms and they hardly make any sound. I don't make any sound with heavy weights, I'd feel embarassed and a total knob if I did.

Whenever I hear some guy making loud noises I just imagine what he is like in the bedroom, like how pornstars are; "arghh, YEAAAAH, OOOOH UH, UH UHHH!"

Seriously, keep it down you asswipes. Nobody wants to hear a weak cunts lifting mediocre weights.

Dropping weights is for tards. Any time you're lifting something heavy in real life it's likely you'll have to set it down gently to avoid breaking a moving part if it's a machine, or to avoid breaking contents if it's a container. It's important to practice for that in your strength training.

I have no problem with grunting or yelling.

Yelling in the gym is the male equivalent of this:

I lift heavy weights. No yelling necessary.

I grunt fairly loudly, not on purpose. That said, I don't even drop the weight when doing deads. Sometimes I let gravity do its thing for the last fraction of an inch to ensure I'm doing dead lifts, not bouncing the weight. Sometimes I reset my grip entirely, like on my heavy set.

I've seen a lot of gym videos with these huge guys doing 200lb dumbbell benches and then they drop them, watching them tumble into another guy's working space. That's obnoxious.

I drop dumbbells when I get up near 100lbs. It's the safest way to put them down. A properly equipped gym will have rubber mats and rubber dumbbells which are made to be dropped. I don't throw thew them down to make a loud noise, but I drop them from the bottom position to save my shoulders. It doesn't make much noise and they don't roll into the other persons lifting area. You can seriously fuck up your shoulder if you don't set them down correctly so be careful with that.

I am yet to find a safe way of getting heavy dumbbells to the floor after pressing without dropping them.

There is no alternative.

On the general point; one has to distinguish between dropping weights because one can't be bothered to bend down and dropping weights because it's safer.

The former is bad sport and the latter is perfectly acceptable.
