What's wrong with that? Complimenting can work, with some push spiced in shortly afterwards. I like it better than the phone survey thing. I wouldn't trust just handing my 500$ phone to a total stranger without any buildup.

@Sturmgeist and @Atlantic - So far it's worked pretty well. I just use it to get in there and get the conversation started. I'm still pretty new so I'm just trying to concentrate on getting things started for the most part.

The line is fine for a direct approach if you maintain a strong masculine presence and frame. I have used it successfully many times along with variations of it. Other forum guys have also used it very well. Your criticism of it is unfounded particularly in the context of your advocation of a line that sounds like a common scam or sales pitch that most people want to avoid during their day. Girls will give their number out as a method of ending the interaction.
