Interesting article on hair color and attractiveness
So the article is here but I'm going to strip out the interesting parts and put them here.

Quote:Nicolas Guéguen from the Université de Bretagne-Sud, in France, has just published a research paper entitled 'Hair Colour and Courtship: Blond Women Received More Courtship Solicitations and Redhead Men Received More Refusals', and it's published in the academic journal 'Psychological Studies'.

In the first study he conducted, female subjects, wearing blond, brown, black or red coloured wigs, were observed while sitting in a nightclub. In a second study, male collaborators wearing different coloured wigs asked women in a nightclub for a dance.

Guéguen points out that previous surveys across the globe find dark fringes account for more than 90% of all natural hair, whereas blond accounts for only 2%, while red makes up only 1% worldwide. One theory had been that women who change their hair colour, prefer less common tints, so as to increase how they might stand out and therefore attract male attention.

Honestly not sure I would agree with the girls seeking rarer tints. I think it's just due to the large presence of blondes in pop culture.

Quote:In Guéguen's most recent research, a female subject sat in a night club for one hour, and the number of men who approached asking for a dance was measured. The experiment was carried out on 16 different nights in a four-week period. Each subject tested four different wigs four times. In that crucial hour, overall, 127 men approached the women wearing a blond wig, 84 men approached the brown wigged lady, 82 went up to the black haired woman but only 29 approached the red haired lady.

Unfortunately, the article does note state where this study was done or whether or not they ran it three times (once with each color) to control for the attractiveness of the individuals. It is still interesting though.

Another individual did do this, although with dying the girl's hair instead of using a wig.
Quote:Viren Swami and Seishin Barrett, psychologists at the University of Westminster, London, had earlier conducted a similar experiment. In their study the female subject, a natural brunette, dyed her hair blond and red. She sat in various nightclubs over many weeks, and the experimenters observed and counted how many men approached her during a one hour period. When she was blond, 60 men came up to her, while brunette the figure dropped to 42 and then when red, male interest languished at 18 approaches.

The findings seem fairly consistent.

This is the more interesting part of the original study, in my opinion.
Quote:In the second phase of the experiment, while slow songs were playing in the nightclubs, four 20 year old male confederates were instructed to ask a woman for a dance.

27.5% of the women said yes to men wearing a blond wig, 30% for the men with a brown wig, 35% acceptances for the invitation to dance were received for men wearing black hair, but only 13.8 % for men who donned a red wig.

It seems red haired men are less desirable, probably explains why Benedict Cumberbatch dyes his hair black. Being a blond male myself, I'm a bit disappointed.

Some interesting details and plausible explanations for the hair color preferences.
Quote:Swami and Barrett also surveyed men in these same nightclubs probing them on attitude to female hair colour, using pictures of the same female confederate with different hair colours. In the study entitled 'British men's hair color preferences: An assessment of courtship solicitation and stimulus ratings', when she was brunette the woman was actually rated as most attractive from her image, so how come the men actually approached her more, when she was blond?

One theory Swami and Barrett propose is based on the fact that their female confederate in the experiment was also rated as more 'needy' by men when she was a blond in the photographs, than when she was a brunette or redhead. The study has recently been published in the 'Scandinavian Journal of Psychology' and argues blonds being perceived as needier may have encouraged men to make approaches, possibly because it induced greater feelings of dominance or confidence in them, which in turn reduced their inhibition.

Perceptions of the blond confederate as being more needy may have reduced men's fear of rejection or fear of an hostile response, which increased their chances of approaching her as a blond.

Interestingly men rated the brunette in the pictures as most intelligent compared to all the hair colours, but also the most arrogant. The red head picture was rated as the least shy, the most temperamental and the most sexually promiscuous of all hair colours.

Laugh Redheads being the most sexual promiscuous Agree2

TLDR rest of the article is blonds are more commonly CEOs in the US and Gingers are more commonly CEOS in Europe.

Anyway, post about your thoughts or experiences.

Blond girls just look sluttier. Also, with the redheads, you have to be aware that there are quite a few different types of 'redheads'. Do they mean orange hair, auburn or very dark red?

Yes, but why is the question.

The answer it would seem is because we instinctively find blonde hair more sexually attractive.

Once again this is just science confirming what we already know; gentlemen prefer blondes and women like tall, dark men.

I believe they lumped them all together honestly. Although my guess is it was dominantly orange and dark red, otherwise auburn could have been so close to brown that it could have interfered with the results.

True, but the extent is always interesting. As is where the other hair colors fall inline. I wouldn't have guessed there would be a 7.5% difference between Blonds (me) and black haired individuals.

That being said, 35% for asking someone to dance, seems low to me. Although I guess it was a night club, not where I usually go to dance.

I love red heads and my least favourite's are blondes, that is strange. I've noticed that introverted guys go for red heads but that's only like 6 people I know who fit that description and we all prefer red heads

RE: Interesting article on hair color and attractiveness
Skimmed through the article.

My personal observations are that people are attracted to what is considered exotic to them.

This is defined by:

- Culture e.g. Chinese people consider 'white' to be ideal and have adverts on whitening skin products in the metro etc.
- Environment e.g. supply and demand?
- Experience with women of certain traits etc.

I come from a Mediterranean country and blonde is considered the ideal in terms of hotness. This is rare as everyone is olive-skinned and dark haired. Everyone wants a Russian girlfriend and it is considered status by men and slutty by 'hater' women. You will notice a lot of them dyeing their hair too.

I know black or tanned guys who claim that Scandinavian girls love them due to their complexion and hair colour.

It was popular for me in the UK, the natural tan and brown hair.

Zombiejim is from Australia and I know a lot of Aussie girls are blonde, that could explain why he doesn't prefer blondes.

Just my two cents, I believe we want and are attracted to what is rare is it is unique and we strive to be unique and get off that narcissistic element.

My current girlfriend is blonde and I dig it a lot. I am aware that it affects her hotness in my eyes.

re:CrashBang on blondes being attractive

Good question. It could be a religious/societal brainwashing thing, it is angelic and 'pure' in a lot of people's eyes.

I am not sure about sexual promiscuity though, that all depends on the history of men and social constraints.

Needy = the political correct word for slutty

Attraction to the opposite in terms of light/dark features could be an evolutionary trait to prevent inbreeding.

It would be interesting to see what the results would have been should the field tests have been done in parts of the world where blondes are of the majority.

At least in East Asia, being blonde or red as a man is easy [even easier] mode. Some white girls may not be attracted to you, but Asian girls sure will be.

Southern European girls also like blonde men.

I think blondes are overrated. I usually prefer girls with dark hair. Needless to say, I'd still hit if she passes the boner test.

Make every day count.

Or, in parts of the world like South America (most specifically Brazil) where everyone wants blonde hair.

+1 to that! Love me a good porcelain skinned red head.

But as said by a couple of previous posters, as long as she passes the boner test I'll bang it.

On redhead males getting more rejections, all the evidence you need is:
