Hi guys. Been wondering about this:

To anyone in Indonesia or that's been there recently, what's the extent of this? Is this just on the books or is it being enforced? Is Indonesia still worth the visit?

It's draft legislation. So not in effect yet.

To be honest, I see this not being a problem at all. Even if it passes the legislative process, who is going to enforce it? You can buy your way out of a speeding ticket for $2 in Indonesia. On top of that the cops probably frequent whorehouses as well.

While most Indonesians are Muslim, you won't find any ethical quandries in the general population because most extramaritial sex happens behind closed doors and in portions of societies that most aren't privy too. All in all, it's a stupid law that would A) flood the Judicial system with ridiculous cases or B) Make the judicial system weak because it will go unenforced.

Sounds like it's intended so that cuckolds can legally punish cheating spouses/partners and their lovers?

Interesting that it would apply to non-married people... technically seems like a BF could report his cheating GF *and* her lover and get them both punished. I don't know if I'm reading it right though.

Indonesia is a shitload of Islands. You will find that some will be relaxed and chilled, no-fucks-given lifestyle. Other places however they enforce strict sharia law.

I saw something like that about Dubai too. Consensual sex is supposedly to be illegal. I found it curious since a couple of posters here said it was a good spot in the middle east.

There is a lot of noise on Jokowi implemented new laws that further support Sharia but on the other hand they are opening up for foreign investment. I can't see them closing all the private rooms or mediating them in every club in North Jakarta.

The article is from 2013. Has anything really changed since then? Any new laws within this area that have been implemented and not just proposed new laws?

Nothing to worry about legally. The only concerns I've had when looking for houses to rent has been "slum people" (what can I say, "orang kampung" is a rude but common phrase) getting riled up. The first year I moved to Jakarta, I rented an apartment partly for that reason. Since then, I've lived in rented houses in narrow cramped streets, no issues. It helps if you're in an area where businesses like salons, small eateries, and boarding houses take the place of nosey neighbors.
Sexual normativity is clearly a class issue. Police only raid no-star hotels when they look to bust unmarried couples, and these are obvious shakedowns with little to no legal basis. Race factors in, too: if an Indonesian couple are "living in sin," whispers and social pressure will be applied. If you're a foreigner and not a total asshole, nobody gives a fuck.

Yeah, I couldn't find any more recent articles about either its passage or rejection, which made me think it just fell out of the spotlight of the Indonesian news cycle. So that's why I was asking for info from those with boots on the ground.
