So I've completely lost my love of BJJ after five years, for various reasons I've written about on here before. I still love boxing though. Unfortunately, there really is no real western boxing trainers or gyms in Bangkok. I'm not interested in the Thai style of Muay Thai at all, though I'd definitely be up to train in the Dutch/K1 style. I also hate cardio boxing bullshit. I'm only interested in real boxing training, so a gym that actually produces amateurs at least. I don't need to train with Nacho Beristain, but I'd like to train with a competent coach and team.

So I've been wondering, where could I move that has good boxing training, as well as hot girls, good lifestyle, etc?

Has anyone trained at any boxing gyms while abroad? Anyone seen many boxing gyms during their travels?

Wroclaw seems to have a lot, judging by a Google search. Anyone trained there?

Anyone in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, etc? See many boxing gyms around, or trained at any?

Manila seems to have a lot. I'm not sure of the quality of coaching though.

Anyone have any info they can share?

I train shooto in osaka. And know of a chute boxing gym where all the "pros" at my gym go to as well.

Ive been there when i first wanted to try out that style. Id be willing to say they're good enough to at least put you at amature level, i know i've been wanting to join the first tournamen[試合] i can.

This isn't my area of expertise as far as the boxing business goes, but I'll take a stab at it. For Latin America, first-tier Mexican cities (D.F., Guadalajara, and Monterrey) are at the top of the list. Those cities probably have the most gyms, the most trainers, and the most sparring partners. For second-tier Mexican cities, you might want to try Culiacan. The women there are the best in Mexico, there are some gyms there, and one of the best boxers ever (Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr.) lives there. Aguascalientes and Tijuana may also be options for second-tier cities. I think Culiacan is better.

The words Colombia and boxing don't even belong in the same sentence, nor do Peru and boxing. The Dominican Republic isn't much better.

Your next best bets for Latin American would be Argentina and Puerto Rico. The difficulty of the women scares a lot of people away from Argentina, but you have options for boxing gyms both in Buenos Aires and in places like Mendoza. In Puerto Rico, you have options all over the island. Keep in mind that San Juan is a really expensive city.

In Asia, by far the best options are Manila and Japan. You have good choices in gyms in those two places, but I think that the trainers and sparring partners there wouldn't be as good.

In Europe, I would look into Russia and the Ukraine. Hopefully, someone else can chime in with some more detail on those places.

In the United States, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, and Miami are probably your best bests. I think there's some other forum member who trains at a gym in South Beach or somewhere. Dead last for any city or country is Atlantic City and I never understood it. I think they have a PAL facility there where some guys train. That's it. If later in life, I have unlimited funds I want to open a facility in my hometown that has a boxing gym, a indoor tennis court, and which offers ESL classes. It wouldn't be a way for me to make money, but rather a way to give back.

Just out of curiosity, how's your weight?

The Robert Garcia Boxing Academy is here in my city (Oxnard, California). It's about an hour and change from L.A. It's produced fighters such as Brandon Rios, Marcos Maidana, Sergio Martinez, Antonio Margarito, Mikey Garcia, and quite a bit of amateurs. The women here suck for the most part, though.

I'm at 175ish now, which I hate. Been sick and lost a lot of weight. Bulking back to 185. I don't plan to turn pro or anything. Possibly amateur fights but I box because I enjoy it, so weight isn't an issue too much, within reason.

I'm surprised Colombia doesn't have many boxing gyms. Seems to be quite a few Colombian pros from there.

I forgot to mention that I'm not interested in gyms in the US.

It sounds like you and I are exactly the same size. If I get down to 170, I feel week. I usually walk around in the 180s. I've been eating like a complete idiot for the last few days and will try to run it off right now.

There are some Colombian pros, but most of them are either tomato cans or guys who get destroyed as soon as they fight outside Colombia. I know this is just a stereotype, but most of them seem to really lack heart, too.

Here in Santo Domingo I train at the Olympic Village. They are good but nothing compared to what I saw in Mexico.

Outside of the USA, the best boxing training is in Cuba and Mexico.

Also, look at England, Russia, Puerto Rico, and Japan.

This website offers a package to train at the Romanza gym (Nacho Beristein/Juan Manuel Marquez's gym). It's ridiculously expensive of course, but I bet that means you could contact that gym directly and train there for what the typical Mexican guy pays. It's in el DF which has some great reviews on the forum.

Rio, I know how you feel.

I want to go train Kickboxing somewhere that's warm, relatively inexpensive (for long stays) and that has others who aren't American dickheads training who are my size (250).

Thailand is rubbish.

Holland is too cold and hugely expensive.

Eastern Europe doesn't do it for me.

Definitely not going to US/AUS.


It's frustrating.

I trained in Odessa, only toured the Zagreb one.

Odessa's gym is basic, no frills. There is a boxing ring. I wouldn't call it fun but it is cardio intensive, and you will be put you into sparring pretty quickly. Get head gear because some of the guys don't hold back. It's very cheap too, about $20 a month to go 3x a week.

Doing intense cardio in this heat in a building with no air conditioning is not pleasant. The trainers will chew you out if they think you are slacking. My first sparring session they put me in with a guy about 10 lbs lighter and I had him beat. The trainer then took him out and called over a guy about 10 lbs heavier and he split my lip. Everybody was cool and encouraging afterwards.

They do put on lots of local tournaments and push you to enter which is good if you're serious.

In Mexico, I worked and hung out with middle/upper class people who had no idea where to find a boxing gym. For a country that has produced so many great boxers it's surprisingly difficult to find a boxing gym.

You have to bring your own headgear? I thought gyms usually have smelly stuff that people can borrow. Did the 20 dollars include mitt training? Seems to cheap to include that. Thanks.

I know the owner of one on the island very well. They make over £100,000 profit per year; fully managed.

Do you guys get mitt work in each day from the trainers? Do they correct your technique and run drills with you, or just burn you out with endless punches?

Soundz, Bangkok average seems go be around $300 per month from what I've seen. 8-9,000 baht. Pretty expensive, but you do get training 2x per day and you should get multiple rounds on the pads with a trainer, though that pad work may not be so amazing.

That's one of the things I'm curious about in boxing gyms abroad. Good mitt work is really what you're paying for, so if you get crap, or limited mitt work, you're not really learning much. So many gyms and trainers just run people through some brutal cardio and burn them out on the mitts. Most people don't even realize they aren't getting good boxing training because they've never had good training before and they think because they leave sweaty and tired that they got good work in, but they didnt.

I pay $5/round for mitt work in the US. It adds up each month. But has helped tremendously.

Yep considering I use to go to a gym in Melbourne which was about $1000 a year, no time on pads with instructor but still group lessons.

I can't justify paying that type of money when I use it for fitness.

Gimnasio Julian Magdaleno. It's where Saul Alvarez and his brothers trained in the past and/or currently train.
