My memory is that of an elder and I'm only 21. It's often I'll walk into a room or even just open an Internet tab and next thing I know I'm staring at the wall or screen without a clue as to what I was doing. I've also forgotten a great deal of my past, I link both symptoms to the few years I spent terribly ill.

Now what I have found is that I must be honest with myself thoroughly. I know what I will forget and what I will not. For example I never forget faces & names so what I will do is associate everything with a person I know. I'll either mentally link it as a future conversational topic or I will simply bring it up as a minor conversational point.

You can do this with anything, and my tactic mirrors that of the memory palace(did I get that right?) Essentially that tactic is to memorize the layout if a house and a walk taken through it & assigning tasks to the objects within. Them you mentally repeat the tour and if you remember the house correctly it will trigger the associated memories in each room. I don't see why you couldn't do it with reciting the alphabet or in taking a stroll around your office.
