The claim is that the regular web is just a small percentage of the enormity of the content found on the deep web. So i'm curious if anyone has any links to less popular but interesting websites they would like to share?

I've seen the deep web and browsed around. I felt like I was walking in a back alley way, in the bad part of the city. It's uncensored, anything that is illegal can be found there. I found no interesting websites that I would like to keep visiting, except maybe a massive free library of PDF books. It's all about gore, illegal porn, drugs, wiki leaks and secretive communication.

I've always been curious just to see what it's like, but at the same time it seems very complicated and I don't have a desire to use the deep web for anything anyway.

If you want to browse the deep web, or the 'other' Deep Web called Freenet, I suggest doing so outside the USA. The U.S. is quickly devolving into a police state, and the FBI have been known to raid someone just for LOOKING at something on the Deep Web.

- Use Tor Browser Bundle, latest version. The FBI has introduced 'Nits' (network surveillance technique bugs) into exploitable browsers in the past (i.e. old Tor browser bundles with JavaScript turned on)
- Use a VPN that is outside the USA.
- Use Linux, if possible.
- Encrypt Your PC - This is the most important. If you're the Edward Snowden type, then you need FULL DISK ENCRYPTION, not just encrypted containers. Veracrypt and Diskcryptor are fine apps for this. Avoid any proprietary encryption apps like Drivecrypt, which is almost certainly backdoored by the NSA.
- Never leave your PC on unattended. If you leave it on overnight and they bust down your door thinking you're a terrorist or some other boogeyman, even if you pull the plug, they've got about 2-10 minutes to freeze your ram, dump the encryption keys (which has your password) and can even cart off your pc still running.
- Use PGP for any incognito communications.
- Never use your 'entertainment' or 'business' OS or browser for any deep web stuff. Keep them separate.
- Run Tails from a VM (Virtual Machine) if possible. This is mainly for guys who want to run a hidden service (i.e Silk Road).
- (Optional) Run Tor or Freenet or I2P from an encrypted container on an encrypted partition.
- On Freenet, never use the 'Darknet Friends' feature unless you trust them 100% (i.e. met in person and you trust with your life).

If you really want to go dark, then your online darknet persona must be the complete opposite of your real self. Food preferences, weather, political affiliations, sports teams, even the way your write and the words you misspell must all be different since you can be fingerprinted and profiled by all of the above and found very quickly. Entire books have been written about how to do this effectively, but it's always better to omit any personal preferences at all when talking with strangers.

If you're on Tor, which you have to use to even access the deep web, and you're using a VPN like Private Internet Access (recommended) you have nothing to worry about.

Going on the deep web isn't against the law at all. There are plenty of legit sites. Even going on the less than legal sites and buying, say, a book from the Agora Marketplace isn't illegal. Are you constantly on sites that that sell illegal items? Then yes there is a greater chance some hint of data from you will be swept up in data collection. But again, Tor is still somewhat a layer of protection itself (lessening all the time) and a VPN that doesn't have records (the key aspect), like I recommended above, makes it near impossible to identify you.

The people that have been busted usually are either owners/admins of the sites who have been sloppy (Silk Road etc), or consumers that got busted for what occurred receiving illegal items, i.e. Customs/Postal Inspection, not from actually making the purchase of that Cali Purple. They target the big dogs, the people who run the sites, not really the consumers (exception being k. porn buyers), and even then it takes a massive effort and resources. Its not something thats going to be done for your average customer on the marketplaces.

I'm sure there are some good things on the dark web but anything worthwhile comes with a price.

I traversed the deep web after looking at the original deep web thread. I mainly ran into conspiracy theory websites, libraries and a revenge porn site(before it was illegal). Still going strong with no signs of worms, tracking or surveillance.

Conspiracy websites and libraries, yeah there most likely isn't extensive surveillance, but it definitely is happening on the deep web. To the point where there has been an enormous reduction in the number of sites dealing in illegal items- they've been tracked, shut down, arrested etc. I would no longer use Tor alone without a VPN, and even then I wouldn't be buying RPG's or something. Tor has been significantly compromised by law enforcement, especially in the past year.

There really isn't for most people. The legal sites on the deep web tend to be just people that like the idea of being on some "underground" portion of the web, or groups that want to have an added layer of privacy/protection to chat. Most of them could do the same thing on the "clear web". There are also a lot of databases and libraries that go back years that you can access information.
