Regardless of brand, they're almost all made with the same main ingredient: PVP/VA Copolymer.

Don't use gel.

Hair wax to style; hair spray to finish/hold it.

Lots of brands for both work decently in this manner.

Oh man I hate "product" in my hair. Feels so gross and unnatural. I also started washing my hair a lot less since I started this forum. CREDENTIALS: Best Hair High School (Graduating class of 550 students)

Pomade, fiber or paste, depending on your hair type and style you are going for. Not gel.

Saying that, I went without any products for the last 4 years and like the results better. About day 3 after shampooing I have enough oils to style my coarse thick hair and it will stay, about day 6/7 it starts to become too oily and wants to lay down too much, then I shampoo again. Repeat. I personally find no need to apply any oils, but it would help in the first couple days after shampooing when your hair is still stripped of oils and not easy to style.

I never thought I would be able to maintain the style I have without product, but go a few days without shampooing and you may be surprised.

I've used most American crew products, uppercut, Johnny B, Gatsby, loreal, Suavecito and have finally stuck to Imperial hair products.

I've used this classic style which is more suitable for a nice strong hold (when I want a nice slick back look)

Doesn't give you that nasty hard feeling when you touch it & it's also water reactivable. I wet my fingers just a bit and comb my fingers through my hair & it looks just like when I first put that shit on. I get a solid 8-12 hour hold. It also has a nice but not very strong smell to it.

Only people I wouldn't recommend it to is those who are exposed to rain. The product washes off very easily.

Also depends how you style your hair though, when I was rocking a more casual messy look I used their Pomade & fiber products & they're also pretty amazing.

They're a little pricey ($20-24 4oz)

But the little amount required to put on your hair along with the quality makes it well worth the money for me.

I stopped using hair gel a long time ago but I could definitely recommend Hanz de Fuko:

I stopped using gel a couple of years ago. Now I use V05 conditioner. It holds the hair firm like gel but when you mess it up it doesn't get flaky, just soft and smells good. Put it on like any hair product not in the shower. You should try it.

The nice thing about hair products are they are 10 bucks max. So if you don't like it, either throw it away or return it - no big deal.

I like the paul mitchell stuff.

Read the ingredients and never buy anything with alcohol in it. It drys your hair and skin, fades your hair color (long term use) and messes with your natural oils.

I would advise you to try out all of the above and find what works best for your hair and the look you're trying to achieve.

I've tried a few different products and I've also tried abstaining from products to see how the natural grease looked. I've concluded that for me, I like Aveda Clay the most but it's a little over priced so I used Old Spice Forge. These aren't gels but matte finish putty. When I think gel, I think of the stuff guys put in their hair in 2002 that gave a crusty feel and collected lots of dust in your hair over the course of the day. Of course, that was me in 6th-7th grade.

The problem with hair advice is that people have very different hair profiles and environment profiles. Roosh put a video out on why you shouldn't use shampoo and hair gel. I experimented it under two different conditions. Roosh has a naturally thicker hair profile compared to my hair which is a naturally thinner hair profile.

Whether I should use shampoo is dependent on my work environment. I found in an environment which is more physically laborious or blue collar, I found myself needing to use shampoo and conditioner everyday to get rid of the sweat and grease I accumulated . Consider that I attempted it for a month, my hair just looked like absolute shit within a week. When I got in an environment that was different from that, I experimented again and observed that I didn't need shampoo.

However, I have to still use gel/additives to style my hair due to the thinness. Its pretty important that I style it. My hair profile gives the impression of someone who is much older. Even though my hair isn't receding and I am not balding, my hair profile gives that impression. I asked a few Barbers and all have agreed I'm not balding and don't have a receding hair line. My hair needs to be on the shorter side for the most part to look younger.

I agree with those saying American Crew. I've used its Fiber, Defining Paste, and Forming Cream and was very happy with each.
