I'm not an expert on classical music, but only an avid listener. To the classical guys here, is Andre Rieu and his orchestra the best we have today in modern classical?

His performances are impeccable, passionate, and entertaining, in my opinion. Not to mention, the dude is also pretty charismatic, which is a trait I believe any band leader should have.

He has a great following worldwide and I believe he's a master at what he does; making classical popular still.

He is a Dutch guy, and he has gotten quite a bit of criticism over here because he is supposed to be too commercial. But I suppose you can't argue with the fact that all of his shows are always sold out, and he is indeed very popular. So while I can't say if he is the best, he is indeed one of the more popular band leaders.
