Right now I'm in a situation which some travel-loving single men would give their right arm for -- I've been offered 2-year job contracts in Madrid, Dubai and Bucharest, Romania. The contracts are all pretty similar and have good perks such as free accomodation. What I have to decide on is which of the three places I'd be happiest staying in for a couple of years - outside of work I'd obviously be looking to have a good social life, bang as many chicks as possible and do some travel/exploration in my spare time.

I've been to all three places before (although admittedly I was only 15 when I went to Dubai) and my current thoughts on them are as follows:

Madrid
The city: Not as touristy as the likes of Barcelona, but a large modern cosmopolitan city with plenty to see and do.
The culture: The laid back Mediterranean culture suits my personality pretty well. Spain, like most of western Europe, is generally liberal and quite progressive.
People/socialising: Despite a snobby reputation I found people in Madrid pretty friendly. Excellent nightlife ranging from big house clubs to cosy bars with good live music. Something to suit all tastes, age ranges etc.
Girls: Spanish girls are awesome but can play a lot of games and can be difficult to pull. It's hard to tell what my notch count would be like here, even with my decent Spanish. Quite a lot of Latin American immigrants too.
Nearby travel opportunities: Rest of Spain, Portugal, France, north Africa.


Dubai
The city: Futuristic skyscrapers surrounded by desert. I think it all seems a bit fake but I suppose if you look a bit deeper you could find a more authentic experience.
The culture: The most liberal place in the Arabian peninsula, but that's not saying much. Cultural/religious pressures mean Arabs and expats don't mix much socially. There would be a lot of cool things to do there but it's not the most authentic place on the planet.
People/socialising: Apparantly there's a good close-knit expat social scene, especially if you're involved in sports like soccer or rugby. Locals generally dont socialise with expats.
Girls: No chance of banging local Emirati girls. Many clubs are apparantly full of hookers and the minimum entrance age is 25. There might be a lot of decent western girls over there though.
Nearby travel opportunities: Emirates, Oman, Saudi, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Jordan etc.

Bucharest
The city: Tourist guides slate it but I enjoyed it. It's ugly as sin but has a rough character and edginess that few other European capitals have.
The culture: The mix of Slavic and Latin cultures is interesting and you see shit in Romania (e.g. horse-drawn carriages in the city centre) that you hardly get elsewhere in Europe.
People/socialising: I found Romanians warmer than some other Slavic people. Didn't experience that much nightlife in Bucharest but apparantly it's good if you know where to go.
Girls: Lots of hot girls here and I'm sure there's potential for a foreigner to do well, especially since Bucharest isn't that touristy.
Nearby travel opportunities: Located in the centre of eastern Europe; easy to get to plenty other countries nearby.


I'm not 100% where I want to go yet and would appreciate advice from people on here, particularly if you've lived in any of the places mentioned.

Personally I would choose Madrid since that would give me the best lifetyle. I'll guess that Dubai would mean more money, and Romania would mean more/easier girls, but Madrid is where I would enjoy livimg most, and feel most relaxed. The Spanish have got a lot of things right when it comes to the art of living.

Don't know so much including Israel in your list of places to visit from Dubai. There are definitely no direct flights. They have always had tense realtions (or really no realations at all) but they have become much worse after an assasination, almost certainly carried out bya huge Mossad team, in a Dubai hotel room a while back. If you have an Israeli entry stamp in your passport they will likely give you a very hard time at immigration. Likewise if you have a "Jewish sounding" last name or otherwise activate some insular immigration officials "Jewdar".

I would choose Burcharest simply because I think the girls are better looking than the other options, plus I am sure you could run up some serious numbers there. However, outside of women Madrid seems like a pretty cool place to be.
I have friends in Dubai and socially it does not seem that great.

I'd say money wise, you'd get the best bang for your buck in Bucharest as the cost of living is the cheaper of the 3 cities you mention. That could be an important factor to figure in your final decision. Also what plays in favor of Bucharest is the warmer romanian girls, specially if you venture outside of Bucharest. I'm sure when you live there, you would establish a good social network pretty fast and from there, you being the cool young expat, you'd be a hit there with the ladies. Also, since this is Europe, you could fly to anywhere in the continent for pretty cheap, so a weekend trip to Madrid for example can be easily feasible and easy on the wallet as well.

Dubai could be good depending on the package/benefits you get. You could make more $ there but your social life won't be as vibrant as the other 2 cities. All in all, it depends on what are your primary goal: make as much $ as possible or bang as many girls as possible. I'd say the city with the best balance in terms of $ and girls is Bucharest.

off top of head-- if you're young enough to get Spanish chicks you like--Madrid, otherwise Romania. Agree with the "pay me double to live in Arab country" poster.

Looks like it's probably between Bucharest and Madrid at the moment. Dubai has better money but the social and cultural side of things doesn't attract me so much. What do your friends say specifically about socialising there?

I'm 27 but look a few years younger. I generally prefer girls a few years younger than me (20-24 ideally).

I think it depends on whether you could actually see yourself liking Romania, even beyond the women. Will you fit in? Will you learn the language? Do you like Romanian culture? If so, it would be a really offbeat place and a really unique experience to live there for a while. But if you find their whole way of life on the cheesy side, you may get bored. The idea of living and working anywhere in Spain strikes me as unmissable, especially with Seville and Barcelona so close, and the rest of Europe accessible by train. So to me it hinges on whether you could see yourself really mixing it up in Romania or not.

Dubai sounds like hell to me, just one giant air-conditioned luxury mall in the desert, full of the kind of expats I avoid like my life depends on it.

Dude, go to Bucharest. The women will appreciate you more and you won't have to play the stupid games you will have to play in Madrid and Dubai. Having just spent some time in Bucharest, you can't go wrong and there's something just so mysterious about Romania that I just can't put my finger on that makes it so intriguing.

Back to your question, I would go Madrid, but that is the only one of the three I have been to.

However, RodneyStrong broke down a sick case of the flu for Romania, and I have seriously contemplated rolling there this summer, so my verdict must remain undecided.

Plus if you are getting the same salary for all three places, then it is a no-brainer. Bucharest by a landslide, you will live like a Prince.

FWIW I had heard about horse drawn carriages in Romania - but I sure never saw one in Bucharest... maybe if you go out to the country you will see that. Personally, the quality, quantity and friendliness of girls when approached makes Bucharest the best place I have ever been. I still can't believe what I experienced there. I visited 14 countries this year prior to experiencing Romania. It is the only place I actually went back to - having cancelled a trip to Belgium and Holland to go back to Bucharest for another week. I actively seek pussy in every country I visit and I found far more of it without much hassle in Romania.

Today, as I sit here in San Francisco I am applying to jobs in Bucharest and trying to figure out what skills I might be able to use online via a freelancer website... that's how serious I am. I'm putting my money where my mouth is in this regard - it was that much of a life changing experience - and I've been to a lot of places - so that's saying a lot.

It's a no-brainer to me - go to Bucharest before all the other dudes figure it out.

Dubai is a fly place to visit but I wouldn't live there. I spent $6K the week I was there. The heat/humidity will suck the life out of you. A couple years back a company contacted me for a job in Romania. It fell through and I was sick as a dog for it. Bucharest would get my vote hands down.

From RodneyStrongs compelling trip report to Romania I'd say Bucharest is the choice. However, I expect Spain has far better culture, climate and food... so it's a matter of preference.

I'll be teaching in international schools. I applied for a lot of different ones and those were the ones that came good.
