So Rooshv recently tweeted an image of Varg Vikernes with a quote of his opinion on feminism.



Back when I was a teenager, I was huge fan of Black Metal music, and I still listen to it today. One of my favorite bands back then was, and still today is, Burzum -- the solo project of Varg Vikernes. He's the basically the god father of Norwegian Black Metal. He made Norwegian Black Metal a thing. If you are a fan of extreme metal music, you should know who this man is. If you aren't a fan of extreme metal, then no problem, you're excused. But I digress... My mind is just blown that Rooshv has tweeted something from this Norwegian Black Metal icon. But in a way, it makes perfect sense, this was inevitable.

I'm going to avoid a huge introduction to Black Metal music, I'll save that for another thread. But suffice it to say that certain types of music attract certain types of people. For example, punk rock more often attracted leftist types, and metal appeals to people that lean to the right. We could get into a whole discussion about how some forms of music are maybe more r selected or K selected, but that's a another topic.

Today, Varg is a pagan Norse man that is deeply in touch with his roots and his understanding of real identity. He wants us all to return to our roots, to be self sufficient, to think more in terms of culture and tribe, to be more authentic and in tune with mother nature.

His critics, many of whom are leftists, will say that he is a racist, a murder, and he burnt down several churches in Norway during his black metal youth. But in my opinion they are taking his past at face value. The murder was over personal animosity between two men, and Varg claimed he acted in self defense, so who knows.. Varg spent at least 15 years in prison, so he served his time.


As for the accusations of racism and why he burnt down churches in his youth, it all makes more sense if you listen to him explain his own philosophy and worldview rather than just listening to his leftist haters. He's a regular on youtube channel now. His videos, when he talks about his beliefs, are very fascinating to say the least. He is a wise Norse man.

That's a huge debate, though I think Burzum gave modern black metal more of it's aesthetic, sound, and ideology than Mayhem did.

Euronymous made Dead's skull into a necklace after he killed himself (in addition to taking pictures of his corpse and allegedly making a stew out of his brains). Varg did kill Euronymous though.

The guys a nutcase who's got recognition from doing totally awesome black metal things like burning churches and deciding to kill his bandmate, rather than his shitty music. And it truly is shit. Typical garage band bullshit, recorded on what sounds like a tape player with some screaming on top, and his bass playing on Mayhem's album.. you cant even hear it so why do people rate this 'musician' ..? He sounds and looks like an attention seeking weakling, faggot to me.

He also has stopped playing music with guitars as apparently that's a 'n****r instrument'. So he uses keyboards instead, like keyboards and pianos have never been played by black people? Retard.

Sort of figured, he was some Euro. philosopher in a similar vein to Neitzsche.

Most of the figures from the early Black Metal era are controversial figures to say the least. I wonder how much of Varg's story was Roosh familiar about before tweeting that picture.

It is a fascinating subculture and I can't imagine any other place of birth for it other then the cold North of Norway. It is the ultimate rejection of mainstream thought, way of life and expectations that society puts upon the individual. We can argue if the answers the subculture provided are valid (in my opinion, not completely, but they were obviously on to something), but those people merit our respect for breaking their chains, and starting the storm.

Do they also deserve respect for wearing makeup all the time? Sorry, 'corpse paint', my mistake. What answers do they provide? Burn churches and go to jail? What chains did they break? Are they being oppressed by Christianity and trying to break free to become pagan corpse like people who worship satan?

Isn't all one big publicity stunt to make the music seem 'cool' and 'rebellious' and 'metal'?

Traditional blackmetal bands/musicians tend to have hard-right viewpoints. Varg isn't a special case, just has the biggest voice in that scene - primarily due to his infamy. They are also all very racist, misanthropic, and militant. You can cherry pick single quotes and viewpoints, such as the one referenced in OP, but you could do that with neo-nazis, KKK, and other extremist groups.

That specific quote has a lot of merit and relevance to this community and modern western society as a whole, but I'm not sure I would want to be associated with this dude as a backing for any kind of cause. It's like quoting Charles Manson.

As far as corpse paint is concerned, the visual aspect is as important as the music. The Medium is the Message. I'm aware that it is hard to believe, but those people were the real deal at the time, and the music was the vessel for their ideology (no matter what we think about said ideology).

In my view they were the people who just like us in this forum, refused to live the lives of quiet desperation, and tried to find their own philosophies. I understand their mental point of origin and their train of thought because it was not so different from mine a couple of years ago actually.

You could argue that.

Most Black Metallers are, in reality, dark fantasy nerds and dorks. Instead of playing just Dungeons and Dragons, they turn their dark fantasy world into a complete lifestyle, into their reality, with their music and world view. Just like Goths and other sub-cultures. At the end of the day, they're dorks. Nothing wrong with that, though a few take it too far.

Funny thing is, Varg is an avid RPG gamer. Half of his videos on his youtube channel concern role playing games.

On Christianity... I think Varg is right. Europeans would be much stronger today if they had held onto their pagan roots. They'd have stronger cultural roots and a sense of identity that other non-european groups currently enjoy.

Until the Light Takes Us is an enlightening documentary about the roots and reasons behind the black metal scene.

Vikernes is a genuine psychopath. He talks about the murder as if it was any other day in his life. No emotional response to memories of stabbing a man to death.

But the motivations behind the movement should be familiar - it's based around anger at the destruction of traditional ways by interlopers, who use force to make people conform to new ways of 'acceptable' thought and behaviour.
